This is excellent. You've captured the scene perfectly, as well as the protagonist's personality and thoughts. The language is excellent; some of the lines are wonderfully memorable; I especially like:
"Lest this silence be the death of you."
And the last line is fantastic - gorgeously worded, and a solid (and perfectly in-character) ending to the entire piece.
"If only to see those uncommon things - clods of earth falling onto glossy mahogany - and to hear that infamous line which they use in the movies, then yes."

Gah!
That's honest work, that is, and really quite scary as you show what people can actually be thinking at funerals, unwilling even then to show feeling and emotions

Wow, this is very good. Very evocative, nice choice of POV. Your character is very real and as always, your work is funny, if in a darker sort of way this time. Nice ending, I really enjoyed this, ^_^
