Yay, an American that doesn't like American government! Wow, I didn't know that you had to recite some sort of pledge in America . . . HOW DUMB IS THAT? I mean, national anthem in the morning is fine, okay (I, personally, find it annoying at my school), but some sort of pledge? Meh. A REALLY big waste of time. Oh, and I probably shouldn't've written all that stuff, because now scary people in black are going to find out where I live and come and kidnap me . . . AHH! I'm going to go hide under the bed, now.

That was great. The stanza /Almost done now
Longing for your chair
What's on FOX tonight?
Conservative news.
Lies.
And the Lying Liars who tell them./ Is so true. All the news care about is ratings...

Erm... no.
I'm about as liberal as they come, but I still am not fond of this poem. This is really more of a rant, just you rambling about every aspect of America that pisses you off. It's also quite cliched. You're certainly not the only one who doesn't take great delight in the Pledge of Allegiance. Think about the word "allegiance". All the Pledge asks of you is to ally with your country, to assist this country rather than its enemies. We're not asking you to be a raving patriot with flag stickers plastered all over your mini van. We're just asking you not to commit treason.
That's all.

This poem is one of the best i have read on this site. Its so true and it states exactly what a lot of people are afraid to say.I also refuse to stand for the pledge of allegiace because i dont believe in what this country stands for nowadays (violence, greed, world domination). You have exposed the evils of blind patriotism, rabid religious conservativism and capitalism (plz no one be offended by my socialist views) Keep up the good work and dont let conservative nimrods like L. E. Madison stop u. Theyre a bunch of hippocrits who dont know what theyre talking about (if they believed in fighting for the right of freedom of speech then they wouldnt bash you for exercising yours-if you think your classmates are freakin idiots for doing whatever their told to do w/o question then you should have every right to bash them for it in your poetry. Hippocrisy makes me sick) Oh yeah and Al Franken Rocks!

Good for you. I've always hated how people just mindlessly recite the pledge, and how legislators think they can force us to say and mean it. Recitation does not breed loyalty; rather, it dumbs down the population and allows everyone to remain in their unquestioning little lives. Does anyone ever stop to think what enforced use of the pledge means? Suddenly, allegiance is neither a choice to be proud of or a judgement to be withheld. What does this do to our "liberty and justice for all"?

a really great poem. i can appreciate not standing for the pledge, i never do, even when my teacher threatened to lower my grade (i point out that was against our school's code, that shut him up fast enough). i liked the rhetorical questions, they really emphasize the fact that most people don't question. i liked the lines "No more red, white, and blue
Replace with green, gold and silver"
very nice touch. the quote from al franken should've been in quotes, but it really works there. i like the OC reference, shows mindlessness of today's teens. shows the only thing they give a fuck about it their made up TV shows and equally dramtic fucked up lives. the end was good, nice kinda paradox there. overall, a well written peice.

I don't stand for the pledge either, so I thought this poem really summed up some of my feelings on the subject. A lot (if not the majority) of the people who choose to say the pledge do it just because they've been raised to, or because everyone else does it, but you have to realize that some people really feel like they're supporting America when they do it. Load of bullshit to me, but hey, live and let live...

THANK YOU! Someone finally gets it. Writes about it. Good job. Long, but not too long. Of course I'll be reading you're other poems too, if you have any more.

If you really, really want to make a moving statement about your veiws, I wouldn't suggest quoting a crackpot comedian like Al Franken.
Secondly, this is a poem seemingly intended to be a rational, intellectual poem mostly based on raw adolescent assumptions and blind assertions. You owe the ability to talk dirt like this about your country TO your coundtry. Without the lives lost in past wars for America's sake you wouldn't be able to talk like this about your own opinions- we'd be under someone else's rule, and that someone else would probably be a still-communist Russia or Germany. Because your schoolmates honor those people and the system that keeps them free is no reason to scorn them. They're not making anti-liberal statements when they say those words. They're saying that they like thier country on a whole and they hope it keeps on doing them to general good it has been for the past two hundred years. 'Blind nationalism' is not necesarrily bad. What's bad about liking your country?
The nonchalant yet scathing attitude you attempt to take on in the middle of the poem is underscored by your too-frequent use of short, meaningful words. Don't overuse emphasis or you've lost the meaning of the term. The poem comes across as too bland because you seem to want to emphasize nearly every word and because you split up ideas too much. Everything in moderation- especially the blind, anti-American rage you come across as having, even if you don't mean it.
