for Rap and Poetry: Two Totally Unrelated Genres

You have no idea what your saying u take a small portion from one song and generalize that as all of rap music. That is logically inconsistent and this should be taken of the internet immedietly

Rap *is* poetry. There is no way around it. Seeing as rap is written in verse, has rhythm, and even contains a rhyme scheme, it has to be poetry. What else is there? Prose? That would be ridiculous. Prose is how people commonly speak. It is written in paragraphs and has no specific rhythm or meter, making it different from rap.

Poetry doesn't have do please you to be poetry.

I listen to rap and write poetry. I love them both. They make sense to me. You, on the other hand, are completely incapable of properly interpreting that Snoop excerpt.

Okay I was taught to respect peoples opinions,but I think youve got some things messed up.

There both forms of selfexpression,sure some rap songs are usless and Im going to say stupid as hell.

But again theres two reasons(completely diffrent reasons)

why people listen to rap.

1)Self expression and self impowerment,isint that what poetrys about?

Example:

Eminem - Lose Yourself ;

You better lose yourself in the music, the moment

You own it, you better never let it go

You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow

This opportunity comes once in a lifetime yo

The soul's escaping, through this hole that it's gaping

This world is mine for the taking

Make me king, as we move toward a, new world order

A normal life is boring, but superstardom's close to post mortem

It only grows harder, only grows hotter

He blows us all over these hoes is all on him

Coast to coast shows, he's know as the globetrotter

Lonely roads, God only knows

He's grown farther from home, he's no father

He goes home and barely knows his own daughter

But hold your nose cause here goes the cold water

His hoes don't want him no mo, he's cold product

They moved on to the next schmoe who flows

He nose dove and sold nada

So the soap opera is told and unfolds

I suppose it's old partner', but the beat goes on

Da da dum da dum da da

Some people havent gotten the best out of life-yes i'll idmit some raps are stupid and CRAP but then you need something uplifting fun,I read,ive been to counseling,ive had hard times, but Ive learned it better not to sit there whining and bitching about life-hoping for someone else to come save you.

Shorter example:

Beyonce-Single Ladies;

Now put your hands up

Up in the club, just broke up

I'm doing my own little thing

He decided to dip, but now you wanna trip

Cause another brother noticed me

I'm up on him, he up on me

Don't pay him any attention

Cried my tears, for three good years

Ya can't be mad at me

Not exactly a rap but it comes pretty much from the same genre.

But I do like Poetry,I actually have Edgar Allen Poes poetry,I have some of hes short works as well,I like horro to(Stephen King-Almost all hes books).

I do respect youre opinion but you have to understand if poetry is selfexpression,why cant rap be that same relase?

If you wanna have a good time why not rap about it?

If youre upset why not rap it out?

This has potential as a comic/satirical piece, though it's rough around the edges. I'm afraid, though, that a lot of people are going to take it for a serious rant.

Basically, I have two big problems with this essay:
1} You can't just compare two random "objects" and then draw a conclusion from this information. Also your choice is not fair. You picked a poem of one of the best poets (I'v heard) and a random rap from a not so good rapper (at least I think so).
And this brings me to my second problem:
2}Your conclusion is that rap is not poetry. Why not? Both use words and rhyme, waht is the difference? If you make such a claim as you did, you must give a definition of poetry and then prove rap does not fall within that definition. You did not do this, and I don't think you can do this because rap and poetry are very simular forms of art.
The only thing you succeeded in was telling me you don't like rap, and that you came to this conclusion using just one rap and one poem. Not very convincing.

have you ever heard rap/read poetry? I doubt it. First, lets look at some of the swill on this site that people call poetry. There is no rhythm, theme, and there is virtually no joy from reading it. IF you don't think that rap is poetry, read tupac's book "the rose that grew from concrete." You don't know anything about rap other that you hate it and you should keep on hating it. Rap is poetry but so many other art forms claim to be what they aren't. Many of the new forms of rock i do not call music. You can't even dance to it but it is called music? what? Rap is art. Oh, and please do not say that Snoop is odd and then compare it to poe.

...Epressing oneself through thought or expression. that is the definition of poetry. Even though some rap is extremely...strange, it is still poetry. It is still and expression of feeling.

I agree with g21lto. Some rap out there is definitly poetry and some of it is..well, it's crap. Nice rant though. Very angry and passionate.

I think rap and poetry are both art forms in their own right. I've heard some very irritating rap about Doggz, CREAM, yo momma, and the like, but I've also heard very good rap with meaning behind it that I would call true art/music. Just the same as some poetry is sublime, yet some poetry is so horribly, awfully...OK, I can't come up with enough descriptors for it, but some of the poetry out there is really crappy. Every art form has its masters, and its artists who copy the masters but aren't quite as good, and its artists who downright suck. There's some very deep rap out there, just the same as there's rap about Doggz and yo momma.
