A well-written piece that explains things quite well; if anything you over-simplify from my perspective.
I think you're actually erring on the side of pessimism. It may be different in the US, but here in Britain the big companies generally stick to towns large enough to support more than one outlet. The place where I live has at least five coffee bars but no Starbucks, and most local shops rely on being closer and more convenient than the nearest supermarket, and charging accordingly!
