I really like the premise to this story, but I think it would be greatly improved if you were to write it in such a way so that the reader thinks the "dead" person is attending a funeral, rather than the subject of one.
Out of curiosity, did you know that there was such a fear of being buried alive in the 18th and 19th centuries that "safety coffins" were invented, which were designed to alert gravekeepers if someone had been buried alive?
