You're really lucky to be surrounded by open-minded people. But just because they're open-minded doesn't make it any easier. My best friend came out to me our freshmen year, and when he was pondering over telling some our of mutual friends (one being my other best friend), it wasn't a comfort to him that they were all accepting of homosexuals: because this was him they would have to accept.
