That would be so scary for that to happen. Though I haven't experienced anything like this, I know places where this can happen, such is if I enlist later on, or something of that sort. But really touching, I guess you have to be a good parent and want to protect your kid to really fully comprehend this.

I suppose for life's lessons some have to be lived, experienced and not exactly prewarned about. I definitely agree with you about that teen stage where we believe exactly what we want, think we're right, and just happen to know everything. Though I think I went through that a lot less than my siblings, being that I'm the eldest and sometimes can't afford to make mistakes like you've stated and as I've put above.
Yet, I believe that you learned your lesson partially due to the way your parents raised you. Which is a good thing, because a lot of teenagers fault in these areas mostly because of their upbringing, as well as amongst other reasons.
Very nice essay. I hope other teenagers come to learn the same thing you did.
