Wow. This piece makes my mind instantly shift to two other books, instantly:
1. Green Darkness, by Anya Seton
2. Lolita, by Vladimir Nabokov
Because from the impression that I get, the narrator is perhpas a religious authority figure and he has feelings for someone young and teasing, whom he should never have but wants very badly.
I'm not even sure that's what you were aiming for, but that's what I feel.

yes, this is gorgeous.
i honestly can imagine it being read to students in the classroom, then people murmuring and debating and wondering at the meaning years and years from now. i love it.
