Honestly, I don't like the word nerd. People have been taking it nowadays as a compliment (same with geek and dork and other things like that) but to me it is, and always has been, an insult. Labeling yourself as a nerd, at least in media, really just describes someone who is a fan of things like superheroes and comic book things (which I think is a geek, but whatever). The actual meaning of nerd, like you said, is somebody who is pretty much socially inept. So, take it how you want, but I still wouldn't like to be called a nerd. Don't take this to mean that I don't like 'nerdy' stuff, I love it, but my point remains the same.

You don't sound like a nerd. People are so weird these days. I really like your essay thingies. They make me think. :D

Yes, it’s quite a conformer’s tradition. So is the rest of them. I suppose it makes them feel better about things.

I define a nerd as follows: someone made of awesome.
So...
I have to say that I read this because it was about being/not being a nerd. And that is sort of a topic I feel strongly about. I really don't think that being a nerd is a bad thing, and I don't really think of it as a label for people to use as an insult or a label for people they find annoying, etc. To me, it's a compliment of the highest variety and it's not so much a label for others to use as it is for yourself. I don't know if I'm making much sense, but still. I feel that being nerdy about something (whether it is writing or reading or watching movies or skateboarding or whatever) is awesome and that people who still use 'nerd' as an insult need to get over it. Just because they're not open minded enough to admit that they have a hobby that they love doesn't mean they can use 'nerd' (a word that I think should be used for good) as an insult.
Yeeah... I am such a B2.0 fan.
Sorry for my nerd half-rant-ish thing. It is sort of uncalled for. . And made for a very non-review review.

P.S. To me, you sounded pretty much like a nerd. So you can take that any way you want to...

Don't worry, "nerd" is just another label for narrow minded people so that everyone will fit into their little boxes. Besides, "nerd" seems to be the new buzz word in the entertainment industry, according to various media. So embrace your inner nerd! :)

the same question has harbored my mind for years. and people just gotta accept the fact that each individual is who they are, not who others want them to be. anywho, nice essay-ish piece. [:
