I have to say, reading this for some reason made me want to add abuse to a story which currently contains none. Although in another story one character gets enough abuse to make up for my entire writing career... still.
It was well written, though, and you do make quite a point.

Well, I in no way mean for this to be a flame, but I will speak what ran through my mind when I read this, all right? Feel free to come back at me with whatever Hell you may raise (Or peace, I would prefer... =]) but here it goes...
I myself do not use or believe in Gay/Straight/Lesbian/etc, so perhaps I'm not the right person to read this (I believe that no person has any sort of predisposition that will draw them to a particular gender and make it impossible for them to be attracted to another; one may like breasts or male figures, but in the end they can fall hard for the "right" person, regardless of sex, if the personalities match up), but I think you're leaving out some things that explain why some of the things you're complaining about happen.
Hear me out and don't get me wrong, I'm just as sick of the overused plot as you are, but let me speak up for the "Waif gets knocked around and runs to some tough guy" thing (Even if it is too conventional.
Okay, so let's say a male is abused by whatever bitch or bastard dares do it, now why does he always fall for a guy afterwords? Psychologically speaking, he probably feels weaker after someone managed to hurt him so, and so he seeks out - for comfort - someone he sees as strong, who he finds to be the opposite of himself (I'm not saying he SAYS this, but in the subconscious, he may be thinking it). That person could be a man or a woman, YES, but unfortunately the cultures of the writers say that man is strong and woman is - if not weak - not to the same extent, and thus the injured male will go to a man.
Now,I do agree that most people who write about abuse haven't experienced it (I am one, for example) but I think many readers are a bit rigid in what they expect from a good, convincing abuse story, and I'll reference myself for an example (Only because I can't think of another instance off the top of my head - comes from not reading enough...:]):
If a story is set in another culture, society, or species, their habits and way of life may be supposed to be different, and so abusive things that take place may reflect that, and therefore be different from what the reader would expect in their culture. For instance, in my work, as it takes place in a different system from the one Earth is in, it was a long practiced cultural thing to abuse males in a variety of ways, including some that were not practiced on Earth. Why? While some may cry, "Just to add cheap drama to the story," it HAD an explanation; there was a ruling on it by their Divine Authority long ago. So, because that's completely unheard of here, does that make it a "bad story" or a "cheap plot?" It may be, but NOT because of that, I should think.
Oh, listen to me rant (Such is the penalty of having no life), and I'm sorry for all this, but I think you and many who commented should at least reconsider some instances so that you don't condemn the whole idea of "Abused runs to man," you know? You are right in many ways; I have read plots that are simply chains of painful, violent, and abusive events strung together with thin wire, but I have also read some where abuse is prevalent and yet I can't say the storyline is cheap.
Thank you for any time you spent reading! :D

Thank you! finally somebody who is as annoyed as I am with the recent flood of M/M slash involving pointless and petty plots and about 5/6 of them contain abuse. What happened to just simple love stories? I don't care about the gender, but come on, make it realistic :P
Blessed be and wonderful rant/essay :)

I agree with you.
Too many people don't use enough imagination in their writing. We all fall for the easy way out some of the time, but every time? Come on people. What about he dates guys because his favorite uncle is gay? Or refuses to because that favorite uncle is against it. Or he falls for a guy during gym who has beautiful hands. Or realized that the reason he so pissed at the guy in history is because he's attracted to him?
And the abuse thing, I hate it. Not that some of my stories don't have abused boys, but the abuse has nothing to do with their sexuality. For me, it's a case of write what you know and I am unfortunate enough to have lived in a home where a child was abused.
When I read the stories where one guy refuses to bottom (I read one just yesterday), I wonder if he really loves (and trusts) his lover. Get a spine. What are you so scared of anyway?
I hate the very girly men. I laughed so hard while reading one yaoi manga because the uke was more feminine that any girl. If I wanted to read a straight story, I would have bought one.
But I think the random rambles should have been on a separate page.

I'm guilty of the jock seme thing. Sorrys :(
But yeah, I don't really like those abuse stories. They're boring most of the time.
Oh, and that friken celebrety kids book thing. I hate that so much. They usually don't even right it themselves, they get a ghost writer! Anyway, please excuse any spelling mistakes, I suck without spellcheck.

Why is this categorized in humour? It’s not even funny. The only reason I shall be laughing is because you put it in humour yet there is none.
1 Because they want to. They can be good at it.
2 No, I haven’t read it.

I have to agree with you in some points... you see, most people don't even know what being gay is. I mean, yes, they know it's a person who happens to like their own gender.
But they don't know that we don't turn gay, we're just gay. I hate every story that uses the idea: "that man f*cked every heterosexuality bit out of me, and that's why I'm gay... poor me.".
I've been asked if I'm gay because some perverted man raped me... and the answer is: of course not. And that may be the cause that I hate people who think that if someone rapes another someone, then the first someone will define the other someone's sexuality. But anyways...
I used the gay-bashing on one of my stories (on another site, of course), because that does happen and it is real. And it actually happens AFTER the character comes out, so the beating doesn't define his sexuality.
But also, I have to disagree with you in the point that every character descriptions follow the same pattern. Yes, there are always dumb anime/yaoi fangirls TRY to write something without knowing nothing from the gay scene(they even use the words "seme" and "uke" in their story... needless to tell more).
But there are always some amazing authors that actually know what they're talking about... and do not use that stereotype.
So... yeah, I do care about this growing problems. But what can we do? The world is dumb.

I. A-grure!
100% wholeheartedly absotively posolutely with a tied up emo boy on top.
You might actually get me going on a gay-emo rant .
But yeah, I'm really tired of seeing the universally identical character in almost every story I read (which is why I have begun to develop writers that I frequent more than others).
You hit it right on the head about the positions though. I'm not much into reading (or even watching O_O) sex, but when it does come up, it's the same thing every time. And the universally identical character is the same one with a different off-beat name (or a non-off-beat name if the author is REALLY not trying).
Maybe we should create RAGS: Readers Against Gay Stereotypes
Meh...

Ok~ay, call me naive, but I kinda had to skip all the sex/porn references. hee?
But I so get your point! (But I haven't noticed, since I haven't read any of it.) The title drew me in; I was really interested! xD

ps- Yeah, I know, doesn't it stink how no one reviews? ;D

Porn and children's books = child porn. Way to go :) This issue definitely isn't slash's fault, just the writer. For some odd reason, some slash writer have those minds. The best thing to do with all stuff like this is to skip their story.
