Okay, I know that I've never been in love and that I'm somewhat of a vindictive person, but the ending kind of pissed me off. I understand that she waited so long for him because she can't control her heart and how she feels and that she forgave him in the end because it's hard to stay mad at someone you love, but I wish she would have punished him somehow (either before or after she took him back).

When I was reading the ending, I remembered the Korean drama/comedy "Coffee Prince" and how the main guy was dumped by his ex-girlfriend (either with a fake reason or no reason at all, I don't remember). Apparently, she had cancer but didn't want him to know and left the country to find treatment. After she was cured and tried to get back together again and he found out why she left him in the first place, he couldn't forgive her. His reasoning was that she didn't love him enough to tell him the truth and fight through the cancer with him but instead hid everything and took on everything alone. It hurt him more that he couldn’t be there for her in the darkest and most difficult time of her life than if she hadn’t shielded him from it. In the end, he did try to give the relationship another chance but by then the main girl (NOT the ex) had already wormed into his heart.

When I think about that TV series and this story, what bothers me is that his excuse of finding himself seems so flimsy when compared to the cancer excuse. I understand that he didn't want to hurt her in the process of finding himself, but couldn't he find himself while he's with her? I mean, you can’t possibly find yourself when you’re completely alone. Who you are is shaped by your relationships with people and your environment, and he did say that she accepted him for him. When he still couldn't find himself by the first Christmas, he could have at least return to her and try to figure it out together. Either that or he shouldn't have asked her to wait in the first place, so that she wouldn't be waiting so heartbrokenly because she seemed happy before he showed up at her doorstep after he broke up with his fiancé.

I guess what I’m saying is that I want her to give him more of a difficult time and make him grovel more. Because she lost those 3 years with him and will never get them back. And those were important, life-changing years for him. He may tell her all about what happened to him during that time, but she will never have experienced it or really understand what he went through. He meant well and thought he was being considerate of their future together, but I thought he came off as being quite selfish. But then most selfless acts are selfish in and of themselves.

Sorry for the long rant but thanks for the thought/emotion-provoking story.

That's pretty cute, but it's a bit too short. I mean, it's a little too much to have in a one-shot - all this things- but you pulled it off. Humor would have been appreciated though.
