The concept of a procedure to remove memories is similar to the movie "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" It takes a very different approach, however, exploring instead the way the character deals with the process of forgetting.
Your story also revealed a somewhat sinister idea within medicine, where the patient is often encouraged to undergo a procedure they are not quite ready for yet, or may not be in their best interest. The good memories and the bad both are taken, but from the way he acted, it seemed to be for his own good.
Makes you wonder if he'd ever truly be himself again. Are memories the same as experience? Would his personality suddenly change?
Excellent idea, and excellent execution.
