Thanks for this! That was what I was planning to do; put my draft on here to gather some interest, then when the whole thing is written, take it down, tell readers I'm doing that, do an edit overhaul (flesh out characters more, make a more concrete setting as well as timeline, etc) then try to get it published. I wasn't sure if this was even allowed, but this helped me to understand some things - really appreciate it!

Found this through a Google search. This is a very interesting topic to me since someday I desire to be a published author and actually discussed the possibility with my high school teacher who happens to be a writer himself and knows other writers. I asked him what would be the best way to get my name out there and he told me upfront that conventions are a good start and also following authors on fan pages and the like. He also told me the story of how his friend self published by posting bits and pieces of his story online which a publisher happened to stumble upon and now he's a published author.
Anyways, I really enjoyed reading this. It's always nice to read the advice of others who actually have experience in what you're interested in.

So wait, if I were to publish my story into a newly-fresh novel to the world, but it is already publish online in FictionPress, my step of succeeding is to, one, save my story (good reviewers and what-not) in Microsoft Word; two, tell my fellow followers and favorites reader about my doing (optional?); three, delete all traces of it being in FictionPress or anything online; four, wait for a few months or more for the story being out of public view, until it is forgotten by minimum; five, when decided to publish and found the perfect company (anyone in the matter), you tell them the whole truth with evidences (don't really know if I need that) and just hope for the best that they agreed to publish your story, in hope for it to be "new" to the public eye, where "no one" has ever heard of your story and more people will buy it.
So...is that correct, or can you please PM me and sum it up so I can get the right idea in mind?

Thank you, :). A few things I was considering putting on Fiction Press to see how they are going to get looked at by now-day's generation, I just changed my mind about. Luckily one story, I put up, I changed the way it was by A LOT, so I'm still deleting it but, now I see it as worthless. I really want to become a published author, but I have a long way to go. I really liked that you put this up here, I need to tell my friend this too.
I talked to a published author before, and now I think with this, I might be able to understand the whole publishing process. To me self-publishing isn't an option. I would rather go through one million publishers, then try to throw my book into the market. Frankly, self-publishing is safer, but more expensive. Well to a teen that's still trying to beat the adults to a summer job.
Sorry if I have bad grammar in my review, I have four more years to go in public schooling life.

Thank you so much! I've had an offer to publish my novel that I've published here in fictionpress and now I know it's probably a scammer vanity publisher. This was a really helpful guide and informative _

Thank you for posting this! It was very informational, and I'll keep it close to heart when I START being at least average at writing, but right now I'm not even close. Again, thank you.

All I want to say is thank you for suggesting the AgentQuery website because I had never heard of it. I went, read for a bout five seconds before realizing it was the greatest website for a writer known to mankind and maybe alienkind too. Thank you again.

This is incredibly helpful! I really like the fact that you included sites you could go to and such for publishing. This is a great guideline; you've got me very excited! :D Thanks so much for writing this!

Thank you for writing this. It's a very helpful guide to someone clueless about publishing, specifically me. The part about electronically published stories really saved me from total time disaster, and it further straightened my goal on a future writing career. Also, thanks for the tip on vanity publishers.
If you don't mind, I wanted to know more of your experiences in getting published. Or maybe other people's experiences. It would be cool to hear from people who got their books published, or from people that are trying to get their books published.

This is one of only two sources I have about publishing my material. The other's this book I have about selling novels. I will read and reread this essay until I have everything memorized, and I WILL see my dream of publishing something come true
