Wow. This is absolutely brilliant and eloquent and strikes this chord deep within me which makes me get all weepy.
I'm not sure to interpret this as the end of a relationship, but it seems like it is - "the boy who'll never leave", and the way she's occupying herself with menial things. It's in the way you try to forget when you have nothing else left.
