I like the humor of this. It's simple, but you're very aware of it, and it makes this a fun read.
I wish you had tied things up more neatly, though. You presented two separate ideas-Gerard and the mango tree, and Gerard and the cat. The second obviously had a resolution, but what about the tree? It didn't seem like his love for the tree was a bad quality, so why was the only result that he was punished for it?
Maybe you should write that sequel, or at least extend this, and explore that more. Yeah? :)
