Ah, so Meifeng's 'family' relates to these two boys she met in the streets. Interesting. I can understand how they must have stuck together throughout those harsh times of hunger.
The spirit marriage mention has me curious. What could Meifeng have in mind? I wonder if it has to do with this great house of Chen mentioned in the last line.

Interesting so far. I can tell that there's going to be a fair amount of back-story to be explored, what with all the family issues implied. Meifeng seems like an interesting character. Her daughter's name is Lizzie so I assume she was involved with a foreigner in the past? I'd also like to see how Leo's role pans out.
Judging by the train of thought (no pun intended), I see Meifeng is returning to the mainland for a purpose. I'm curious to see if it has anything to do with her past.
