Here are two sites about solar flares and I am expirmenting to see if I can get the links to show.

And NASA's version. url?sat&rctj&q&esrcs&sourceweb&cd2&cadrja&sqi2&ved 0CDcQFjAB&urlhttp%3A%2F% .gov%2Fscience-news%2Fscience-at-nasa%2F2008%2F06m ay_carringtonflare%2F&eiY3uLUbHsNIXXiALY0IHIAw&usg AFQjCNG4oBTkOwc-dVvG8twx2lhkxf1Qog .gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2008/06may_carri ngtonflare/

I am not sure how the links will turn out or if they'll even show up period!

You should read about the 1859 Carrington Flare that nearly wiped out the state of the art US Telegraph system which if it did would render communication useless and would take a year to rebuild the system and things were not even computerized yet!

The solar flare actually caused combustion in several telegraph papers made out of special material but strangely enough several telegraph operators noticed the key would still work without connecting the battery though messages would often drop randomly so seninding business messages during the event were forbidden.

The telegraph system did not rely nor use computer technology so was not as easy to fry unlike if that exact event happened today or sometime this month though good news is many of our satellites can be powered down ahead of time.
