This was amazingly written. How glad I am to have stumbled upon this story! I pictured every minute of it, as imagery really stands out in this piece. Tragic, yet brilliantly done. Not every story is a happy one, and this piece really brings out the reality we live in today. Not everyone comes home. Well done, a marvelous piece! :)
As always, keep writing!

Hey CookieCrumble,
I love it how you switch between letter and story. It's very powerful in my opinion. Also most of the promises are easy promises of every day life, which sophistically makes the letter even more sorrowful, since we all know how it ends.
What I liked best is the idea with the candle. I can't get it out of my mind ;)
