There's nothing like a good old fashioned zombie story, which never get old!
Just based on your first chapter, there isn't too much to say other than you have laid a decent foundation.
The opening discussion of the world wars were a nice touch. It's good to drive home the point that nothing close to the end of the world has been experienced.
I would caution you against using the phrase "days gone by" as it is the title of The Walking Dead pilot episode, unless you meant that as a reference.
One question: I have no idea where this is taking place. Is that intentional?
