I liked seeing a little bit more of Dan in this chapter – I liked the detail about his little carvings and the small bear holding the honey! He gave some intriguing hints about the town’s history and the potential danger Meredith might get mixed up in!

I liked Rick and Meredith’s conversation in this, about Dan and the shady island past and some of the mystery. I thought that you weaved Dan and Rick’s backstory in well, and that Meredith was curious to know more. Plus, the kiss at the end was built up to nicely and was very cute :)

I liked that Rick had a bit of respect for Meredith in this chapter and the way she was keeping up with him through the jungle trek! I really liked the nature descriptions too, especially the deadly plants and the heat of the environment!

I like how determined Meredith is and I especially liked that bit where Rick tried to intimidate her with the prospect of walking and back trails, and she just threw it right back at him! I hope they manage to find out more about what happened to Dex!

Nice! I hope Meredith is able to work out some cunning plans and discover herself and her strengths. I would love to see some more description of the island too, just so I can get a broader picture of what it looks like, and smells like, and sounds like!

I think this is a promising continuation of the story, and seemed more realistic and grounded than the first chapter. As you wanted some thoughts on how to make Meredith more rounded and stronger, I think you had some good moments with her considering her motivation and own thoughts when she was swimming. I think fewer epithets would work as well, like ‘the tousled blonde’ as those only really focus on her looks, and I don’t think women define themselves in that way. Although I know I’ve mentioned that before and it is a common staple of romance novels! Also, I liked those parts where she was considering her own drive as then it separated her from being defined solely through Ricardo, and him being the only powering force of her story. I think they both have to stand alone as interesting characters as well as a couple. Overall, I know romance novels can be pretty idealised but I think it is good to show characters’ flaws, not only in cutesy ways, but in manners that speak about their personality and thought patterns too. And I think there were some good hints towards that in this! But overall, I think the best way to write strong women is just to not write them as ‘women’ but as characters first, as then it strips away everything about what a woman SHOULD be or the stereotypes of them, and gives a more interesting character!

I was a bit jarred by the first sentence of this, it made it seem more silly than serious LOL. I found myself wanting to know more about Meredith than just her appearance as she seemed more like a pretty face than a character... Although I’m sure that will change in later chapters! I’m intrigued by the situation she is in, and how it came to be!
