You forgot to mention that your hero got into the magic mushrooms before he left the house. Wow! I don't know how you all managed to get all the fairy tale cliches into one story, but you did, and did it in that wonderful "it doesn't HAVE to make sense" way that that Brother's Grimm seem to have. And it all ends happily. Except for the kids. But who cares about THEM?
