"Run Joe run! Come on guys! Yeah!" She yelled in excitement as the winning touchdown was made. The rest of the team ran out onto the field and was celebrating. She just stood on the sidelines and smiled.
After about an hour of interviews and pictures, everyone went back to her dad's house. Her friend Sarah had come back too. Laura was talking to a bunch of the guys when the phone rang.
"Sarah, can you get that for me?"
"Yeah, no problem." She ran over to the phone to pick it up. "Hello?"
"Hi, it's Jon, who is this?"
"It's Sarah, hey."
"Hey, can I talk to Laura?"
"Sure hold on, Laura! It's Jon!"
"Oh shit, why would he call this late." She said to herself. She walked over to Sarah and took the phone.
"Hey Jon, how are you?"
"Good, but I have some bad news."
"What is it?"
"I can't go to the winter formal with you."
"Oh my god, why?"
"My family is having a get together that my parents won't let me miss, even though it's so pointless, and, I'm so sorry, maybe next time."
"Yeah, maybe next time. Bye."
She hung up the phone and went to the backyard. Sarah followed her out. Laura sat down on the porch swing and Sarah stood next to her.
"What did he say?"
"He can't go to the dance, he has a family get together that his parents are making him go to. This sucks, the first time I've ever been asked to go out by a guy and now he can't go."
"I'm sorry, is there anything I can do?"
"No, thanks though. Could I have a little time to myself?"
"Sure. See you later."
Sarah walked into the house and Laura stayed outside. About 20 minutes later, Adam, the running back of the team, came outside. He was about 5'11" with dark brown hair and brown eyes. He walked to the middle of the yard not noticing Laura.
"Adam?" He turned around quickly to see her.
"Hey, you scared me, what are you doing out here?"
"How long have you been 'thinking'?"
"About 20 minutes I guess." She said with a blank stare looking out into nowhere.
"Are you okay?" He said as he walked closer to her.
"I don't really want to talk about it."
"Come on Laura," he said as he sat next to her. "You were so happy at the game, and when we got here. What happened?"
"Okay, well, my school has a winter formal before Christmas every year. It's next week, and my date just called and told me he can't go. I have my hair appointment and my dress and everything, but I don't want to go by myself."
"I'll go with you."
"I'll go with you, when is it?"
"Look, Adam, you don't have to do this."
"No, it's okay, when is it?"
"It's next Friday night at 8:00. Are you sure you want to come?"
"Yeah, I don't want you to have to go by yourself."
"Thank you Adam."
"No problem, let's go back inside, it's freezing out here."
They walked back into the house and went their separate ways. On Monday, she went to football practice like she always did. At the end of practice, she saw Adam getting into his car, and she ran over.
"Hey." She said.
"Hey, do you want me to pick you up on Friday?"
"Sure. Listen, my dad just told me you and Joe were picked to play in the all star game in April."
"Are you serious?"
"Yeah, congratulations. So you do want to do it?"
"Okay, then I'll see you on Friday then."
He drove away and she slowly walked back to talk to her dad.
"Did you tell him?" He asked.
"Yeah, he's going to play."
"Joe can too, it's impressive that we have two people from our team going."
"Yeah, well, I got to get home. Oh, and I'm going to the dance with Adam on Friday. Bye" She said quickly.
"Wait, I thought you were going with Jon."
"I was, but he has a family get together to go to, and his mom won't let him miss it."
"Dad, what's wrong?"
"Nothing, you're going with Adam, that's cool."
"Dad, please don't tell me you have a problem with this."
"No, it's fine, I'm sorry."
"Okay, see you at home."
She left and drove home. On Friday, Laura got ready for the dance. She had her hair and nails done, then went home and finished getting ready. At 7:30, Adam came and picked her up, and her dad answered the door.
"Hi Adam, how are you?"
"Good, is Laura ready?"
"I'll call her down. Laura, Adam's here."
"Coming." She responded.
Adam stood in the doorway talking to her dad. When she walked down the stairs, he turned around and didn't even recognize her. She was wearing a black dress that had swirls of sparkle that engulfed it. Her hair was done up with curls around her face and in the back. She also had a small amount of eye shadow on.
"Hey Adam, you ready to go?"
"Yeah, you look so, beautiful."
"Thanks, you look so handsome!"
"Thank you." There was an awkward silence in the room while Adam and Laura looked at each other.
"You guys better go, you don't want to be late."
"Yeah, good night coach." Adam said.
