Author's Note: This is going to be my first fic. Feel free to tell me what you think, I'd like to know what characters you like and what kind of things you might want to know. Everything here is on a world I created, so some of the names might be kind of strange . . .I've made a few adjustments.

The night sky was turned a dull red by the flames of the burning village. A girl of about fifteen stood in the shelter of the trees that bordered the small settlement, watching as her home was burned to the ground. Above the roaring of flames she could hear the clash of weapons and her people screaming. She turned away from the sight and ran blindly through the woods, tears streaming down her pale face. Why had her mother refused to let her fight? She ran, stumbling over roots and tripping over broken branches till she couldn't run any more. She sank to her knees, weeping too hard to continue. There all alone in the darkness she sobbed, the image of the slaughter forever imprinted in her mind, a memory that would haunt her for the rest of her life. Finally, too exhausted for tears, she lay curled up on the forest floor, her tear-stained face peering up at the shadowed sky. "Mother," she whispered, remembering the sorrow in her mother's eyes when she told her to hide in the trees. She had wanted to stay and help but her mother had denied her. And in her heart she knew they could not have driven them away even with her aid. Her mother had gone back to the house to find her little brother and had never come back. "Someday, I promise that I will make them pay for what they did . . . to us and all the others . . ." She stared back up at the dark sky, her pale, teary eyes determined. And high above her the stars shone, cold and bright, oblivious to the events in the mortal world. "I promise . . ." With an effort she pulled herself to her feet, wiping the tears away as she gazed back in the direction she had come. She looked down at her hands, strengthened by years working on the farms. She would find someone to teach her how to fight, how to use sword and shield to fight and win a battle. With new resolve, she turned her back on the place where she had lived all her life and disappeared into the shadows.
