"Hyah!" shouted a thirteen-year-old boy, with black hair and a grey headband tied in the back of his head. The boy's name was Li, and he was a mercenary, a fighter. Even though only thirteen, he could out fight someone three times his size, height, and age. Li was currently practicing his staff fighting with a man from the guard's barracks.
"All right, I think I'll call it quits for now and go explore," he said, holding his hand out to pull the man he was fighting up off the ground.
The man grinned and said, "Well, Li, it's better than beating all the guards half to death. Still, you only got here to the city Dragearan yesterday. You'd better explore, there are things here you can't find anywhere else on Ohshey, our little planet. Here, give me your staff."
Li handed his staff over and stepped out of the gate of the practice yard into the rest of the city. It was still morning, and many people were out. They shouted greetings to one another, cheerful and bright. Dragons (who were friendly) flew up in the skies of the city. Dragonriders, people who bonded to dragons and served the Prince and Princess, rode atop their dragons. Dwarves, elves, faeries, and gnomes were scattered around the city too.
Li started walking around. Li wore a gi and hakama, kendo (a kind of sword fighting) clothes. His gi was blue and his hakama was grey. On his feet were geta, or wooden sandals. Li also had a gauntlet on his right arm. The gauntlet was there from when he was born and had a blue-grey jewel on the part of the gauntlet that was on the back of his hand. It was white and made of living metal. It's magic helped him to store things and worked well with his own magic (fighting/war magic and other things such as flight or teleportation or talking mind to mind).
He walked to the marketplace and the palace (the Prince and Princess lived in the city), and around the shops. It was peaceful here, he thought. I think I'll stay for a year or so here. Maybe-
SLAM! A boy, about Li's own age suddenly stumbled into him.
"Sorry, mister," he mumbled and took off. Li watched him go, too surprised to do anything else. Hmm, that boy looks familiar, he thought. I don't think I've met him before, though.
Li started to check his gauntlet, then abruptly stopped. He closed his eyes then opened them to see if this was really happening to him. It was not still there. Inwardly, Li seethed. I know who stole my jewel! That boy! He is going to regret that...
He searched his mind for the link in which he knew was connected to the jewel. When Li found it, he instantly knew exactly where his jewel was. Found you! He crowed in his mind.
Shan, a thirteen-year-old boy, ran after he stole a big blue-grey jewel from some foreigner. He could tell by the accent. He kept on running, straight to a makeshift hospital in the back streets of Dragearan. The blue jewel would buy the people there some food and supplies, he knew. I can't do much with my healing. I need training, he thought miserably. No, think about that later and keep running!
Shan looked remarkably like Li when he wasn't doing things so fast and you could get a good look at him. He wore a long, white shirt, a jacket and long pants, both red, and brown boots. He also had a red headband. Shan always wore a bandage over his left arm and hand. There wasn't an injury; instead there was a gauntlet, white, made of metal, and with a red jewel in it. He hated it, and was afraid to use it. Since he was a thief, no one would teach him magic. Shan just had to experiment, and he came up with a handful of spells and things he could do with his magic. The people at the hospital were friendly to him because he tried to help them. They gave him ideas to try and that helped. But he still needed a mentor.
Shan raced toward the hospital and suddenly stood frozen in place as a spell stopped him.
"Well, thief, where is my jewel?" a voice asked him from behind. The foreign guy came into view and stopped, amazed and astonished.
"What the -?! Why do you look like me?!" the foreigner asked.
"What are you talking about? Why do you look like me?!" Shan said. He was relieved that he could still talk, though his body was still frozen.
"What's your name? I'm Li," the boy said, looking confused.
Shan was just as confused. "My name is Shan."
"Wait...! Where's my jewel?" Li demanded. "No, I see it," he said, walking over to Shan and prying the blue gem from his hand and placing it back in his own gauntlet. Shan wanted to ask about it, but he didn't dare. "What were you going to do with this? Sell it?"
"Uh... Yeah, but to help the hospital!" Shan cried in desperation. "It doesn't really look like a hospital, but there are people who are hurt in there!"
"...You're telling the truth, I placed a truth spell on you. But why don't you sell that?" Li asked, pointing to the gauntlet on Shan's left arm, who's bandage covering it had slipped off a bit. " I'm letting the spell go, don't run, you'll regret it."
Shan believed him; he had looked livid before all this look alike stuff. He unwrapped the gauntlet. "You mean this? I've wanted to, but it won't come off," he complained.
Li's jaw had dropped. He closed it with a snap. "That...it is like mine!" He waved his gauntlet and walked closer to Shan. Li's eye met Shan's and they both guessed why they looked alike and had gauntlets on the opposite arms.
"No way! We can't be brothers, much less twins," yelled out Shan, disbelief on his every feature. "You can't be thirteen!" Li just nodded, looking dazed. "You are! How did this happen...!" Shan groaned.
"Well-," Li started, then was cut off by three men moving toward them.
"It's the Daggers! They're dangerous, let's get outta here!" Shan yelled. He immediately climbed to the roof of the nearest building and stayed there.
Li just shrugged, summoned his sword from the blue jewel and attacked. He was really good, an expert swordsman, Shan decided. Li whirled around like a hurricane, only hitting the men with the blunt edge of his sword, but knocking the men off their feet and unconscious in seconds. Li looked up, not even panting, and called up to Shan, not looking surprised to see him a little away from the danger.
"Let's go, Shan. We obviously need to talk a lot of things over. I rented a room at and inn," he said.
"'kay," Shan said, agreeing with the talking. He hopped down and walked side-by-side, well, a little behind Li. It was now a little after noon.
The two boys walked in silence, then turned a corner. Brothers, Huh? Shan thought wryly. Well, at least it'll be exciting, and maybe I'll get magic lessons! Shan smiled a little and hoped. Twin brothers...
