When the sun breaks through the trees
Do you hear the cries of shadows?
The light peels them from their source,
Flinging down flat phantom forests.
In the dark they were together-
Tree and shade were one, the same-
But now the dawn has split them
Torn the unreal from the real.
With edges defined by light
Is gorgeous and heart-wrenching
But eternally short-lived.
So the shadows defy the light,
Clinging to their former homes-
Intangible, but always
Eventually the sun will sink:
Then shadows and world grow dim.
There, in the sudden flash of night,
Trees and shade unite again.
