A/N: This is a story that was inspired a bit by the show Dark Angel, a bit by other 'save the world' flicks and a whole lotta other stuff. You guys know the deal: Girl with cool abilities, destined to save the world. Anyway, feel free to read my pathetic attempt at writing. Ya never know, if I get a few reviews I might actually finish the story…

Summary: In a world that is corrupt and cruel, dreams are crushed and unknown souls are lost. Ever wonder how heroes are made?

This is the tale of a group of unlikely teenagers, bound by destiny and gifts that aren't quite human. This story focuses on one of those hero's memories. This is her story and how she became a warrior for the good side, no matter how unwilling she was. Did I forget to mention she's a thief?

Genre: Romance, Action/Adventure, Drama, Angst, Supernatural/ Sci-fi

Prologue: Memories

"Isn't it funny how one little moment can change the rest of your life? It's happened to me several times. One of those first little moments I can remember happened nearly 8 years ago…but that's not where I'll start this story from.

I've been told that I should write everything down for future generations and all that crap, but that future seems so impossibly far away right now… It's a good thing that I've got a lot to write about then. Let's see, where shall I start?

Ah yes, the 1st of February 2003. The day my life really began to change, to head in the direction of my current situation. Well, apparently there was no stopping what was going to happen- fate and destiny's like that.

Anyway (cue voice over and tacky music), the scene was New York City and the day was like every other day. Lousy.

It started off normally. I'd gotten up and gone to work, it was a Saturday. Just the normal kind of thing for someone my age to do when they had no parents and had to support themselves. Problem was, I'm no way near normal.

I'd begun to notice I was different when I was around 10 years old. I saw something that changed the way I thought. It was one of those little things, nothing unusual to the average person. Just a mother and daughter crossing the street.

I was in a mirror tinted van at the time and it was one of those rare occasions that they moved me to a different location. It wasn't actually rare that I was being moved to a new place. Hell, I'd been moved to so many places that I don't even know all the states I'd been in, let alone cities. No, the reason it was rare was because it was daylight outside. Glorious, beautiful daylight.

Anyway, that one moment 8 years ago changed my life. Made me think that there was something wrong with it, something different. So I left. Escaped to be precise.

I changed my name, changed my look, got a job as a waitress every Saturday in a sleazy restaurant. I was the best in the job so I quickly got my own place. It was no 5 star hotel but it was home, it was good enough for me.

The rest of the week, I went to a normal high school. I hated it but I put myself through the torture because I knew education was worth something. In some places you need a degree to take away the trash. Of course, my own job didn't always pay for my way of life. So I did some work for other people- B&E (breaking and entering.) I was the unofficial go-between. Someone would contact me with the location and goods that were to be stolen. Then after the deed was done, I would deliver the merchandise. The person who contacted me would get some of the cost for screening the clients wanting the merchandise and my boss and I would get the rest. They were amazed at what my elusive boss could do. Stupid people didn't realise that I had no boss and I was getting both shares of the money, but they didn't ask questions which was good for both parties concerned.

Anyway, like I said, it started off like any other day. I finished work at 7:30, headed back home to shower and change, then out to a club close by, not knowing one of those little moments was coming. Something was about to change my life dramatically for both good and for bad… Oh, and just so you know, my name's Caitlin."
