Bittersweet

The rain patters against the windowpane,

Cold and bleak and dull.

The girl stares through her tears of pain.

Loneliness takes its toll

Hopeless is her misery

As she sits and stares – unseen.

Thinking of what has been

What has begun and what cannot be.

Everything she can see.

Through the darkness all abiding,

Her pain intensifying.

A hand reaches through the darkness.

A light shines through the night.

The girl jerks, a single fallen tear.

A person at the edge of sight.

Representing all she holds dear.

Hope fills her once more

The darkness no longer lores

As the mist clears

And the future reopens its doors.

The fallen savior lays still

As the sun breaks through

Reflecting off the windowsill

Onto glass covered in blood.

Hand in hand in life they went,

And now in death they will not relent.

Their love –

That of Romeo and Juliet.
