Chapter One:

The first day of high school would be none like the others. To start with, this was Elizabeth's first time starting school on a Thursday. As a military brat, she was use to starting at a new school, but this was the first day at Jean Valley High School and it consisted of all new freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and especially seniors. Older, bigger, and taller seniors. She had more than her share of stress, but now she had to include the upperclassman teasing and if she were to be canned. In addition to her stress, she didn't have a clue of what classes she were to be taking nor her teachers, much less how to get around the campus. All students were to pick up their schedules at seven o'clock in the morning in front of the Student Center building. Elizabeth was waiting there for her best friend, Sadie Mockett, because she was afraid to go in there by herself.

In third period, it was announced that the first home football game would be tomorrow. Elizabeth became excited because she had never gone to a football game unless her brother was playing. Throughout the day, talk of tomorrow's game and what the girls were going to wear consumed their conversations.

That night, the majority of the student body, including Elizabeth and Phoebe, attended that football game. Like everyone else, they wore their school colors of gray and blue. As the two girls took their seats in the stand, Elizabeth checked out all the guys. There was one guy in particular that she admired from afar. He was #43 on their football team. She eyed him the whole night.

Number forty-three tossed a spare football with one of his teammates the whole three hours of the game. Apparently, he wasn't as good of a player like all those starting players who were out of the field. Elizabeth didn't mind because her ambition was to date a football player. Her only requirements were that he had a descent body and he had the title of a varsity football player. So as the game went on, the tossing and the staring continued.

When the game was over, everybody seemed to get up and leave all at the same time. The two girls followed along with crowd in the "retard shuffle" into the parking lot. At a moment of coincidence, Elizabeth looked up and caught the eye of #43. She screamed inwardly at the look on his face with pleased with victory of the game.
