Paige walked up to her locker and spun the combination, mutter it to herself as she opened it. She searched around looking for her book, running her fingers through her straight, dark brown hair, when one of her best friends, Chris, appeared. They had been friends since they were about three, and she knew she could trust him more than anyone in the world.
"Ooo, looky here, it's Glenville High's hottest senior." He said with the smirk.
"Yea, I feel sorry that I beat you out on it." Paige replied, laughing.
She saw him checking out a girl that walked by, and her laughter came out even harder.
"Hey, I got needs too you know!" He said. Then he turned and looked at her. "Whatcha up to tonight?"
"Umm, not sure, why?" She told him.
"Weeeell, there's some friends of mine that you could come and hang out with. They are pretty cool."
"Oh ok, do I know them?"
"No, they're not really people that you, uh, seem to pay much attention too, but they kick ass. I think that you'll like 'em." He informed her.
She agreed to it and they headed their separate ways. Hey, it was Friday night, and she didn't have anything better to do. As she walked down the halls, she ran into someone very special. None other than her boyfriend that she had been dating for almost a year, Danny. He winked and kissed her as she walked by. She told him the plans for the night and invited him along, hoping that Chris wouldn't mind.
"Yea, sure. That sounds fun." He told her. "But, uhh, I'm gonna be running a little late, alright? So I'll meet up with you guys at about 8. Oh, and, we sorta need to talk."
Paige gave him a funny look, but agreed and kept walking.
As 6 o'clock came around, she was beginning to get excited about meeting new people. Paige always got that way. She was an awesome person who didn't exclude anyone and would talk to anyone, no matter what you "social status" was. And, Chris wasn't kidding when he said she was one of Glenville's hottest seniors.
She meet up when Chris and his friends, all guys, and they were introduced.
"Ok Paige! This is David, Charlie, Jack, and that guy right there is Ryan." She shook hands with all of them and smiled. They all clambered into the diner and got a nice, cozy booth. She was squished in the middle between Chris and Ryan. Ryan seemed pretty shy and quiet. But, after he warmed up the started talking about everything from school, to cars, to bands, to books… He was cute. He had deep brown eyes that you could just sink into, and dark, nearly black, spikey hair. Ryan was a skater guy and kind of a punk. He played about every instrument imaginable.
They heard the bell on the door ring open, and in walked Danny. He sat down and the introductions were made. After that he turned to Paige.
"Um, sweetie. We need to talk." He told her.
They went outside and he began.
"Look, I'm not sure how to say this. Okay, here goes. There is someone else right now. Me and you dating is a bad idea at the moment, and to put this honestly, I would much rather be with her."
Paige stood shocked. All Danny did was shrug and walk off after telling her that they were over. Tears brimmed her eyes she went back inside, but she couldn't sit down and talk with them. It was too much. So, she ran to the bathroom, sat on the sink counter, and cried.
She heard the door swing open and she looked up. Ryan walked in the door.
"Wha-" she started, but he cut her off.
"Are you okay?" He asked, thoroughly concerned. Paige wiped her eyes and gave him a weak, fake smile.
"Yea, I'm just fucking great. You shouldn't be in here."
But, he didn't leave. "What happened?" He asked her calmly. Seeing that nothing was going to change his mind, Paige explained the situation.
"…and, and I bet she is prettier, and smarter, and funnier than me. And she's probably just an all around better person!" She sobbed.
Ryan came and sat down next to her on the sink counter and wrapped his arms around her.
"No, no that's not true." He whispered.
"Yes it is!"
"No, it's not. Because even though I've only known you for a few hours, I can already tell you that there is no one smarter, and funnier, or prettier, or better than you!" He told her looking into her eyes. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she listened to him. They sat there together for a while, and Ryan really did comfort her.
