SURVIVE THE SYMPTOM - SARS 4/30/03

An epidemic of SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) has erupted, causing major chaos in many Asian countries. What scares people the most is the fact that the symptom is new and profoundly contagious. The lack of information and the fear of catching the disease have kept it hard for medical researchers to achieve their goal in disclosing a cure to the disease. If only someone could bring out a version of panacea from wonderland (that no one is allergic to).

I am told that the incubation period appears to be about 5-10 days. The patients of SARS should be isolated immediately along with the others, which the patients have been aquatinted with. The first signs of the symptom usually appear just like any regular flu (so if you catch a cold don't go frantic). However if you have a fever, aching muscles and difficulty in breathing. you'd have to beware.

It is said that the most efficient way in controlling the disease (preventing it from spreading out), is by enclosing the areas that possibly carries the "virus". Recently, two hospitals in Taipei have been enclosed (along with the people inside).causing major hectic. "Yet our actions must be based on facts and experience, not on fears. The response should not be worse than the disease." In my opinion, I feel that the authorities (or whoever responsible) to the decision has the obligation to organize the arrangements in detail. That would have avoided most of the turbulent emotions in those who have lost contact with the "outside" world. Though I have to admit it is a hard thing to do with an over populated number of beings involved (Which includes not only the lack of equipment but also the lack of rooms).

I've not been acquainted with any SARS patients personally. However, a friend of mine has shared her experience with me through e-mail. She described how one could fight the SARS symptom with their white cells and could gain antibodies after a week (one could survive due to how strong they are). She also says that many researchers has a plan to design a glow- stick thing that could determine whether you carry the SARS symptom or not within an hour, that could keep those who haven't got the SARS symptom from being enclosed. Convenient, isn't it?

"SARS may disappear as mysteriously as it appeared. This could happen if SARS is insufficiently infectious to sustain transmission in our social environment." Says a doctor. True indeed, but intercepting it from spreading would be a challenge. SARS is still a mystery to it keeps on changing its form. Along as technology as entertainment has claimed a part in our lives. when we thought our lives were nature decided to have a payback.
