Wow, it's been a while since I've written original fiction, but hey, inspiration strikes when you least expect it. This story was inspired by two different factors: a friend of mine whose story I have told through this fictional account, and the song used in the story—an original song performed by Clay Aiken (whom I hope will be the next American Idol—he's gotten tons of my votes already) on the final night of competition. I don't know who wrote it, but I do know that it's not mine. The song shares the title of the story… read this little ditty and enjoy.

This is the Night

The night was cool: a clear, crisp night in early May, with the moon shining brightly over the crowd of teenagers entering the building. It set the scene for a high school prom, one of many Elizabeth Stevenson was sure was going on that very night. But for Elizabeth, or Beth as many of her friends called her, this wasn't just any prom. She was here on the arm of a wonderful guy that she just realized she liked more than just a friend… and with the magic that electrified the air of the whole night, she was sure things were bound to happen.

As they passed through the entrance, her date, a certain funny, short—but still awesome—senior by the name of Jacob Lavigne squeezed her hand and asked her, a sincere look in his eye, "Elizabeth, you okay?"

Elizabeth's clear blue eyes gazed back into Jacob's chocolate browns and she nodded, smiling. "I'm fine." She took Jacob's hand back into her own and they ascended the stairs up to the second floor, which contained the dance floor and all the people to socialize with. And socialize they did. Since Elizabeth was a sophomore, she didn't know too many people, except the group she went with, and a few others—including her friend Rachel Santiago and her boyfriend, Michael Evans, who both went to her church. After a while of just socializing, Elizabeth was getting quite bored. Somehow, she knew Jacob could sense it, and interlacing his fingers with hers, he asked, "Do you want to go dance?"

"Sure," Elizabeth replied, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her hair as they proceeded to the dance floor. Blending in with the array of other couples, Elizabeth and Jacob began to dance, awkwardly at first, but slowly became more comfortable and drew in closer to each other. As the music slowed, Elizabeth rested her head on Jacob's shoulder, knowing that she was this close to having all her dreams come true… something she'd been waiting for her whole life. She knew that tonight would be it… so why was she holding back?

(when the answer to all my dreams

is as close as a touch away,

why am i here holding back what i'm trying to say?

lift me up in your eyes

if you told me that it's what heaven is,

well, you'd be right

i've been waiting forever for this

this is the night

Slowly, the couples around them filled the atmosphere with romance—Rachel and Michael included. Elizabeth gazed at them, wishing she could have the same happiness they shared. As she swayed slowly in Jacob's arms, his embrace drawing her closer to him, they had many near-kisses, each one inching closer than the last. Elizabeth knew that Jacob would be leaving soon, and so it may not have been the best time to start something… but looking back on that night, she learned that love waits for nobody.

when the world wasn't upside down

i could take all the time i had

but i'm not gonna wait

when a moment can vanish so fast

'cause every kiss is a kiss you can never take back

Jacob was probably thinking along the same lines as she was, because suddenly, he captured his gaze with hers again. "Hey… you know that I'm going to have to leave soon, right?"

Elizabeth nodded. And although knowing the fact that this romance may be short lived, they both knew that it was better than nothing at all. Their eyes locked in understanding before both sets fluttered closed and their lips finally met, sealing and forming a bond that could only grow.

this is the night where we capture forever and all our tomorrows begin

after tonight, we will never be lonely again

lift me up in your eyes

if you told me that it's what heaven is,

well, you'd be right

hold me close to your heart

i would go with you to the ends of the earth and we'll fly

i've been waiting forever for this

this is the night

As they broke apart, Jacob gazed at the young woman before him, smiling. "Eliza, you truly amaze me."

Elizabeth smiled. No one had ever called her Eliza before, and she kind of liked it. In fact, she liked this whole feeling of being romantic. After waiting nearly forever for this feeling to come to her, this night had finally given it to her. And as she kissed her Jacob again, the words of the song echoed in her ears, and she smiled inside.

lift me up in your eyes

if you told me that it's what heaven is,

well, you'd be right

hold me close to your heart

i would go with you to the ends of the earth and we'll fly

i've been waiting forever for this

this is the night)
