"Amy, I have something to tell you," Jonathon said as they danced.

"Yeah?" she asked, waiting for him to speak.

"I-I. . .never mind." He shook his head. "I forgot."

"Oh, okay," Amy said, looking at him curiously. "Well, if you remember, then tell me." He nodded and bit his bottom lip. It wasn't that he forgot what he was trying to say, but that he didn't know how to say it.

"I'm thirsty," Amy admitted to Jonathon after their slow dance. Truth was, she was uncomfortable being so close to him, especially since they were going to break up any minute now; or rather, she was going to dump him.

"I'll get you something to drink," Jonathon said, breaking apart from her.

"No," Amy said, shaking her head. "My drink's over there." She nodded to the table where her brother, Alex, and Julie were at, joking and laughing.

"Oh." Jonathon watched the scene and suddenly felt left out. Rarely did he ever share any sense of comradeship with anyone except Ron, and even then, he still felt something was missing.

Amy turned to Jonathon and smiled. "You wanna come?" she asked.

He shook his head. "No, it's alright," he answered, suddenly feeling guilty that she was so nice to him. "Um. . .I'll just go outside for a walk."

"Okay, then. I'll join you in a little while." Amy waved goodbye at him and headed towards her friends.

Jonathon watched her leave, her back to him. He suddenly sighed. What the heck was he doing? He was still being so nice to her instead of giving her hints that he was dropping her soon like he usually did to girls who he was soon going to break up with.

He grabbed a can of coke and went outside to the porch. Leaning against the side of the wall, he took a swig of his drink. Ron appeared in front of him and also leaned against the wall. The two friends watched the brilliant crimson sky turned slowly purple as the sun set.

Ron broke the silence. "Have you told her yet?" he asked, not glancing at his friend.

"No." Jonathon sighed. "Every time I try, I just can't do it." He shook his head. "What is the matter with me?"

"Could it be that you like her, not Brigitte?" Ron asked, looking intently at him.

"No, of course not," Jonathon stated. "It's just that. . .Amy's my friend and I. . . I hope we'll still be that way. You know what I mean, don't you?" He looked beseechingly at Ron, who nodded. The two friends stared at the sky silently.

"Hey, so you are here," Amy said cheerfully. She noticed Ron and waved. "Hello Ron, thanks for the dance earlier."

"Sure, no prob," Ron said, glancing at Jonathon. "I'll leave you guys alone." He left.

Amy watched him go, wondering why he left so quickly. She saw Jonathon watching her and smiled. "So, want to go for a walk?" she asked, looking up at the darkened blue sky.

"Naw, let's just stay here."

"Okay."

They listened to the crickets chirp until finally Amy spoke again. "Do you have something to tell me?"

"No."

They fell silent. Jonathon felt Amy watching him with an unreadable expression. He suddenly felt as if she turned into a completely different person. When he turned to ask her why she was looking at him like that, she spoke. "Let's break up."

"Huh?" he asked in a confused way, the words not registering in his brain.

"I think we should break up," Amy said, not looking at him.

"Why?" he suddenly asked, even thought he had been thinking the same thought only moments ago. "Why so sudden? Why?" All his life, it had been him broke off the relationship. This was the first time a girl did it to him.

"No more lies, Jonathon," she said in a tired voice. "We both know the reason you're really dating me."

"W-what? I'm dating you because I like you." He looked at her, afraid that she really knew the truth.

She suddenly laughed. "You're dating me because you want better grades." She turned to face him and smiled sadly. "But that's okay, because you're grades did improve." She sighed. "You could have just come to me and asked for help, or ask your teachers or classmates."

"T-that's not true. I'm not dating you because of that."

"Isn't it?" she asked raising her eyebrow. "It doesn't matter now, anyway. We both know that all we ever could be is just friends."

"Why?"

"Isn't it obvious? You like Bridgitte. I can't think of you as anything more than friends. What more do we need?"

"But I like you, too." He blurted out. As the words registered in his mind, he was shocked at what he was saying, but he knew that it was true.

"You'll get over it," Amy said.

He stared at her, surprised by this cold side of Amy that he had never seen before. For some reason this intrigued him. "Amy, give me one more chance, I'll make it up to you," he said suddenly.

"What you don't understand, Jonathon, is that I don't like you except as a friend and never will." And not a very good friend at that, she thought silently. "I think you should go after Bridgitte." Once you realize what kind of person she is, I hope you can find better girlfriends.

Amy got up and started to leave but Jonathon grabbed her hand. "Don't go," he said, his eyes begging her. Her heart started to thaw against the puppy- dog eyes but she steeled herself. It's going to happen sooner or later, she reminded herself.

"Good-bye, Jonathon," she said, forcefully taking his hand off her wrist and left him all alone.

***

Ron saw Amy come in with such a serious expression that he automatically walked up to her. "All you all right?" he asked.

She looked at him in surprise. "Yeah, why? Is something wrong?" she said, confused.

"Did Jonathon. . .did he say anything?"

She thought back to their break up. To tell the truth, he didn't say much. It was mostly her who was doing the talking. "Not really."

"Oh," Ron said, looking a bit relieved.

"But I broke up with him," Amy said suddenly. "I hope we can still be friends." She looked suddenly worried. "And I hope he keeps his grades up, after all, I've worked so hard to help him."

"Oh. . ." That was all Ron could manage to say. Amy didn't seem to be the least bit troubled by the break up. That was a first. Of course, she could be acting.

Another slow dance was coming on. "You wanna dance?" Ron asked.

"Huh?"

"Let's dance, come on," he said, grabbing her hand and leading her to the floor.

"Hey Ron," Amy said suddenly while they were dancing. "Did you write the list about the ten things Jonathon liked about me for him?"

"I-I . . ."

"I knew it!" she said laughing. "I have to admit, you have a great sense of humor. You do realize that most of the things on there are opposites?"

"Yeah. . ." Ron said smiling. "But. . .they are what I really like about you."

"Ron. . . I. . ." she stopped, too shocked to continue.

"It's all right, Amy," he said. "I like you. I don't know whether my feelings will change a day, a week, a month, or even a year from now. All I know is that I like you right now. I don't care if you like me or not as long as you let me stay by your side. Will you?" She shifted and averted her eyes from his piercing ones.

"Look at me, Amy," Ron said seriously. He raised Amy's chin to up so that she could look at him in the face. "Let me stay by your side." Amy's lips parted to say no but no sound came out. Instead, she nodded her head.

"Ron, I don't know whether I'll like you more than a friend but I'll try," Amy said. "That's all I can promise." She really like Ron as a friend and didn't want to hurt him. With Ron, she felt at ease and happy, like she could be herself. This was something that few people could make her feel.

"That's all I ask."

***

When people asked Amy about the breakup, she always replied "It was mutual." But Jonathon's answer was a sullen, "She broke up with me." Every time he said that, his face always held a face of disbelief. Of course, everyone knew that he had been with Brigitte while dating Amy and even cheated on her with some other girls. Many were shocked that he would even do such a horrible thing to such a nice girl like Amy and they snubbed him in the hallways. As for Amy, she said hi to him whenever she saw him and treated as if nothing was wrong.

The most unbelievable thing was that Jonathon did not go out with Brigitte. In fact, he seemed to have stopped dating. Whenever girls asked him out, he would say, "I'm sorry, I'm not over my ex-girlfriend yet." Maybe he thought that Amy would hear it and change her mind, but she never gave any indication that she did.

As for Amy, she continued to get good grades. Ron was still friends with Jonathon but not as good as before. Amy and Ron hung out often together and sometimes when no one was looking, Ron would reach out and take her hand into his, and she would not pull away.

THE END

Guess what? Yes, you're eyes are not deceiving you, this is the end. Can you believe it? To you it probably doesn't seem like it but I don't really like to give sappy endings, although Playboy's ending was sort of sappy. Anyway, Playboy ended the way everyone wanted it to, even me. ^_^ As for this one, I really like Ron. Sorry Alex fans, just thinking about putting Amy with the guy that I based Alex is a little disturbing.

As for you people who feel sorry for Jonathon, sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do.

The ending is a little sudden but I'm pretty busy these days so I think I'm just going to work on my story Intrigue under my pen name Obsidiansorceress. So bye!
