She was a freak and she knew it. Everyone said so, well didn't actually say it but she new everyone thought it. They called her checkerboard for two reasons; one: she never was alone and you always need more then one person for a game but that wasn't the most obvious reason. Two was her looks, she had ruby red hair and eyes as black as ebony. She hated the way she looked her light pale skin that never tanned or burned and limbs that seemed to be the majority of her body yet she wasn't tall. She wouldn't have minded it as much if her family had been the same but they weren't. Her sister, who she shared a room with because being alone made her fear vulnerable, had light brown hair and blue eyes. Her sister, Emma, was lovely and was the most popular girl in the 12th grade. Her mother was a guidance counselor never seem to have any guidance for her daughter, with her black hair and blue eyes her mother had the world's most beautiful mother award down packed. Her father had light brown hair and green eyes, he was too busy being Mr. Executive to notice her.
They all whispered as she walked down the hall and because of her sensitive hearing she could pick up part of what they were saying
" Look over there, its Samantha the little checkerboard she is so..." as Samantha walked down the hall in her black skit and red shirt that looked great but made her feel like a vampire.
Her best friend, Sally, ran up to her and jammed her books in the nearest looker, " Sam, I can not believe you said no when Andrew asked you to the dance" She babbled, her short purple hair styled as usual.
" Sally I told you not to call me Sam" Samantha said closing her looker, thinking about yesterday when Andrew had asked me to the dance. He had been so bold about it, well being really popular did that to you. Samantha had been shocked and wanted to say yes but the words ' no, I'm sorry, I can't' had escaped her lips. She then had felt her legs moving away from the blonde hotty.
" You don't get it, I didn't have a choice I just said no and left" She said rubbing her forehead. Ever since she had turned 13, she hadn't had any choice over what she did. When her 14th had come around her already red hair had gotten even redder and her brown eyes had turned black as if time were preparing her for something. She even looked older then all of her friends and was one of the reasons guys kept asking her out and as much as she thought it would be fun she always said no. " hello earth to Samantha" Sally said waving her hand in front of Samantha's face. " oh sorry, hey are we still on for that sleepover tonight?" Samantha said looking hopefully at Sally, every since she was little she had been deathly afraid of the dark, even more afraid of that then of being alone. Her parents and sister were going to Emma's cheerleader tryouts. " Samantha I can't I have a test tomorrow" Sally said " But Sally you said you would come you know how I hate being alone plus how much I hate the dark." She begged trying to convince her friend to reconsider. " I know but this is how I failed my last test you said I could study at your house and we never did, my mother said if I failed another one she would ground me." Sally said Samantha's head was spinning, she could not be left alone, she new that if she was something would happen she just didn't know what.
