Chapter 1If You Whisper
We left right after school and went straight to the beach. He knew this secluded section that was private property. I ran straight out, after a quick pit stop at my locker, to his truck and he met me there.
He had told me we were going to private property, but I started to get a little worried when I saw the "No Trespassing" sign. He noticed my worried expression when I saw it.
"Don't worry, I know the guy who owns it. He won't mind. He said I could come here anytime I wanted."
I relaxed and the ride continued to be peaceful.
He parked in the shade under an overhanging of rocks.
"This is where high tide stops. But it won't be here 'till dark." he told me.
He hopped out of the truck and grabbed the stuff from the back. Right as I was opening my door, he had come around to open it for me. I mumbled an apology and we both turned red. There was an awkward silence and he broke it by suggesting we go put down the blanket. I said "okay" and we set up.
I sat down on the blanket Indian-style. He was kind of standing there awkwardly, so I suggested we change into our swimsuits and go for a swim. Like a gentleman, he told me I could have the truck and he would go down the cove a ways so we could stay decent. I said "okay" and grabbed my suit.
I went into the cab of the truck and started to change. I found it to difficult in the cab so I got out and decided to go to the bed of it. That would be stupid, I thought to myself. So I just went to the front of the truck and changed there.
A few moments later he yelled from the other side of the rock overhang and asked if I was decent. I threw the towel around me and yelled, "yea!" He walked around with a towel around his waist and both arms crossed in front of him like he was trying to cover his chest or like he was cold.
"What are you doing?" I asked trying to stifle my giggles.
"Trying to cover myself so I'm decent."
"You're a guy, Danny! You don't have anything to cover up there!" I replied still trying to suppress my laughter. He turned slightly pink and I couldn't hold them any longer. I started laughing so hard I had to take hold of the truck to keep from falling. He sort of put his hands stiff at his sides and looked like he didn't know what to do. I started trying to say sorry through my giggles but I wasn't working to well with me trying to stay on my feet and hold the towel at the same time. I must have been a funny sight because when Danny looked at me he started laughing too. H e didn't have the truck to hold on to, so when he started laughing hard, he just plum fell down. Well, that didn't help my case any seeing him rolling around in the sand laughing. So I just gave up on the truck and the towel and fell down laughing in the sand too.
While we were both laughing, we some how managed to crawl towards each other and we laid our heads beside each other to help control our laughter. After lying there a few moments, we both subdued our laughter and he leaned up on one elbow to look at me.
I giggled. "I'm really sorry Danny, I didn't mean to laugh but you just looked so funny…" I trailed off.
"Ah, that's okay Zeph. I don't mind. I needed a good laugh to break the tension."
"Thank you Jesus for the laughter! God knows we needed it." He yelled at the heavens and motioned with his hands and arms. He lay back on his back and stared squirming. I turned over on my stomach and propped up on my arms.
"Why are you wiggling?" I said playfully as I knocked him on the top of the head.
"I think I go sand in my trunks." He said continuing to wiggle and pulled at his trunks.
I started to squirm too. I looked at my arms and legs, which were covered in sand.
"Now that you mention it, I think I got sand in my suit too."
He leaned up and kissed me. "Well then, let's go wash it out with a swim." he said as he got up and trotted toward the water.
I laid there stunned for a second, then smiled to myself, or outwardly too, and got up and ran to the sea after him.
Later that night, near sundown, when we had dried off and put our clothes back on; on top of our suits because we were to lazy to change, we laid down on the blanket to just enjoy the nature-made silence. After a while, he, being the boy he was started getting restless. I looked over but didn't pay him much heed. He got up and went to the water. When he came back, he started to pace.
"What's wrong Danny?"
"Wha?-oh nothing," he smiled, "nothing's wrong."
"Ok." I said lost for words and ideas, "Um… why don't we eat now?"
"Okay. You know I'm always up for food. Never can pass up a good meal." He said with his killer shy guy smile.
He turned the tailgate down so we could eat on it, and no sand would get on our sandwiches. We ate while the sun decided if it wanted to set or not. After we ate, Danny suggested we sit on the blanket to watch the sun set. I agreed so he put the tailgate back up and we sat on the blanket. I sat with my arms around one of my knees and my chin on it.
Danny sat there a while then he started getting restless again. He stood and went down to the water again. When he came back he started pacing again. He evidently heard me open my mouth because before I could say anything, he did.
"Look at His creation," Danny said as he motioned to the beach, ocean, and sky, "it's so beautiful isn't?"
I sighed a happy sigh. Of course it was and it was even more beautiful because I was with him. Thank you Jesus, I secretly prayed and praised Him. Danny came and sat down beside me and put his arms around his knees and his chin on them. After a few moments, he spoke.
"I think I love you Zephaniey." He whispered to his knees. My name being barely audible.
I sat there stunned but deep inside I knew it was true, and that I love him back. Dear Jesus, dare I say it back? I prayed silently. I put the words on his lips my child. I stared at the setting sun. A few breathless seconds passed.
"And, I believe I love you back Danny." I whispered to the sea.
We sat there in silence for a few more minutes. But for the first time, it wasn't an awkward silence. H e moved close and put his arms around me. He moved in and kissed my head. A soft tender kiss. Then he kissed my cheek. Finally he ever so gently took my chin in his hand and turned my head so he could kiss my lips. It was quick at first then our kisses became longer. After a few times kissing, I turned my head back toward the sea and he took my hands in his and kept his arms around me. After the sun set, we could see the stars. We sat and looked at them as well. We sat like that for the rest of the time. Until he had to take me home.
We held hands all the way to my house. When we got there, he gave me a kiss on the lips in his truck, walked me to the front door, and pecked me on the cheek.
After he made sure I got inside, he left. I got closed and locked the door right as our clock struck ten, which was my curfew on school nights. "Right on time," I whispered to the receding taillights outside the window, "Right on time."
End end end
