Chapter 14: Revelations
The usual chatter of students before the beginning of school was interrupted by the secretary's voice on the intercom. "All students please report to the auditorium for a short assembly before classes."
Most of the students cheered, it wasn't everyday that they got an assembly and got to get out of 1st period of the day. Kazuki's mind wasn't on the assembly. All last night and that morning as he got ready for school, his mind had been on Ayumi and the information he had gotten from the internet the day before. 'How did they get all that information on me and the others? Have they been watching us ever since we met Ayumi?' Kazuki questioned as he followed the crowd of students through the auditorium doors.
"Yo! Kazuki my man! Over here!" Yuuichiro shouted over the noise of their fellow students. He, Miwa, Haruka, and Reiko had saved a seat for him.
"Hey guys," Kazuki said in a monotonous voice and sat down heavily in his seat. As he stared at the seat in front of him, deep in thought, he didn't notice his friends exchanging looks.
"So," Reiko said loudly, "I wonder what this assembly is about."
"Yeah me too. I have no clue," Yuuichiro agreed. "You know anything, Kazuki?"
"…..No..…" was all Kazuki said, his thoughts somewhere else.
"Alright people!" called the principal who stood onstage, behind the podium. "Settle down!"
Gradually, the noise in the large room died down.
"Good. I'm sure you are all wondering what kind of news could keep you away from your important studies," some students made gagging gestures at these words. "Well, as you might have heard, the gang Black Spiders have been arrested by the police for possession and vending of illegal firearms, possession of illegal substances, and endangerment of civilians. And today, the government agents who captured these men are here to talk to you. Please welcome Captain Masuoka," the principal led the weak applause for the government employee.
Masuoka stepped up to the microphone as half a dozen men and women lined up behind him on the stage.
"Good morning everyone. I am Captain Masuoka of the 2E Department and these are the men and women of my department behind me. We are here to give you a brief description of our department, our agents, and what we are faced with everyday. Some of you, after this assembly, might decide to become an agent in the future. I would encourage anyone who makes this decision to sign-up at the door to undergo recruitment for a training camp that will take place during the summer.
"Now, to tell you about our work and our three most valuable agents, we deal with illegal dealings, gang activities, those types of crimes. In almost every case, it requires our agents to go undercover and act as buyers or recruits in these groups, or rings. In my department, I am guardian of three of our agents. These agents are our youngest, and the best of their generation. These three particular young men and woman have also helped us to solve a number of street racing cases," these words caught the attention of much of the males in the room, whom were interested in street racing and their cars.
"One of them, I'm sure you all will remember, that occurred a few of years ago, was the case involving the hijacking of high performance cars right here in Tokyo. These three agents went undercover and posed as street racers to expose the criminal. They have done a remarkable job for their age and have proven that they can hold their own against our most experienced agents in the area of martial arts and firearms," said Masuoka. "I must say, though, these three have showed great skill in downhill drift racing."
"And so, I'm proud to introduce to you Kimura, Kenzo," there were gasps as the well-known street racer stepped out from the left of the stage, "and his younger brother Kimura, Keisuke. They used the alias 'the Drift Brothers.'"
Everyone was shocked. The Drift Brothers were government agents?! Was that how they had gotten so good? Did the other agents teach them?
"Our youngest agent was a street racer even before she came to help us. She was driving illegally at the age of 11, which makes her driving experience in street racing 7 years. Kenzo has been racing for 5 years and Keisuke for 4 years."
"And this is our youngest, Koishikawa, Ayumi, also known as the Koishi Racer." The whole room filled with gasps. All the students were in disbelief. A classmate of theirs was an agent?! And was the Koishi Racer? The fastest racer in the Gunma Prefecture?!
Kazuki and his friends were staring stunned as Ayumi appeared and walked over to her fellow agents on center stage. She was dressed in loose black pants, black heeled boots, a light blue tank top and a black vest. "W-What?!" Reiko, Haruka, Yuuichiro, and Miwa exclaimed. Kazuki could only stare wide-eyed in a shocked daze.
