Chapter 4: Set Up
Brian pulled into their grandmother's driveway, which appeared to have been shoved early this morning because there was a very light coating of snow left. He turned off the engine and looked at Elizabeth.
Elizabeth felt his eyes staring at her; watching her. She turned around to find his blue eyes looking into hers.
Silence.
The silence was quite uncomfortable for Elizabeth. It was weird having her brother gaze into her eyes the way he probably did with his girlfriends. As for Brian though, he took the time to study Elizabeth's feelings she hid deep inside. He knew she felt uncomfortable; he could tell from her facial expression.
"Lets go inside." Brian said, breaking the silence.
"Uh, yeah, ok." Elizabeth responded.
She let go of Brian's hand and began to open the door, but Brian stopped her before she could step outside.
"Don't tell anyone about this, alright Liz?"
Elizabeth grinned and nodded.
She stepped outside into the cold and looked around. The scenery was beautiful: the bare trees, the white snow, the sky full of fluffy cotton- like clouds. She wanted to just fall into the snow and just stare endlessly at the sky.
Brian watched his sister look at the sky. "She's so beautiful," he thought to himself.
He shook his head in attempt to get the wild thoughts he had of his sister. He bent down and collected some snow and packed it together to form a oddly shaped snowball.
BAM.
It hit Elizabeth right on her bare neck and began to melt. The cold water ran down her back making her yelp.
She turned around and saw Brian laughing hysterically. Her face was all scrunched up and looked annoyed. She bent down and formed a more nice round snowball and threw it right at his open mouth.
"Aww, you're going to get it now!" Brian yelled at Elizabeth as he bent down to grab more snow to make snowballs.
He threw another strangely shaped snowball at Elizabeth, but she ducked in time and stared running for the safety of their grandmother's house. She ran in and closed the screen door and stuck out her tongue.
Brian threw the snowball although he knew that it wouldn't hit her. He started walking inside too.
He took off his squeeking shoes when he got in and walked towards the kitchen. There was a lot of laughter and chatting going on there.
"HELLO BRIAN!" their elderly grandma yelled out above all the other voices.
"Hi grandma." Brian said unenthusiastically.
Brian saw his grandmother walking towards him with a wide smile on her face.
"Oh, my! Look how grown up he is!" She said as she reached her arm up and pinched his cheek.
She let go and walked back into the crowd.
Brian rubbed his cheek, which was now pink from the cold and her strong grip.
Elizabeth walked out and began mimicing her grandmother and pinched his other cheek. She laughed and walked away towards the family room.
Brian mumbled words under his breath as he walked around the kitchen asking if anyone needed help.
"No, it's fine dear. Grandma and I have it under control." His mom replied.
"Uh, mom, where's dad?"
"Oh, he went to the grocery's to get a few things. To tell you the truth, I have no clue what he went and got."
"Ok. Well, I'll be in the family room with Liz if you need me mom."
"Alright dear."
Brian walked out towards the family room. Elizabeth layed on the couch stretched out as she watched some music videos on MTV2.
"Brian, do you think Grandma actually watchs MTV?"
"I don't know. You can ask her if you're really curious though, Liz."
"Nah, that's all right."
Brian walked closer to Elizabeth and stood infront of Elizabeth, who looked up at him curiously.
"Can't you see I'm trying to watch TV?" She said when he wouldn't move.
"Can I take a seat on the couch?" Brian asked her.
Elizabeth sighed loudly and sat up so he could sit down. When he was seated she just layed down on his lap and continued to watch.
She began to hum to the music video playing which was "Going Under" by Evanescence. Brian just watched her in sheer amusement as she stared at the TV and watched.
In the kitchen their mom and grandmother were shuffling around as they cooked and pulled out the silverware and plates. They were arguing over using the nice silverware or the ones she always used.
Elizabeth's blonde hair was laying on her chest on one side as she continued to watch the television. Brian continued to watch the TV as he ran his fingers through her hair. Elizabeth yawned and made herself more comfortable on Brian's lap. After a few more yawns, she fell asleep.
Brian was watching Sean Paul's "Like Glue" music video when he noticed she had fallen asleep.
"She probably didn't get a lot of sleep last night." he thought to himself. He yawned thought, "I didn't get a lot of sleep either." He leaned back on the couch and feel asleep also, his hand rested on her arm.
Their grandma came out and smiled as she saw them sleeping on the couch. "Jade dear! Come out and look how sweet your children look!" Their grandmother whispered into the kitchen.
Their mom popped her head out the opening leadning from the kitchen to the family room and smiled.
"Their adorable, aren't they mom. Well, we'll let them sleep." Their mom said as she pulled her head back into the kitchen and continued to cook and bake.
