5The next day was Sunday. Elizabeth slept late, and when she got up she could smell breakfast being cooked. She quickly got in the shower and got dressed in a green tank top and khaki shorts. She then went downstairs to find Jane cooking and Brian and Kevin sitting at the table, still in their bedclothes, waiting to eat. Elizabeth took a seat across from Brian.
"Good morning everyone!' She said sounding cheerful.
"Good morning," they replied.
After they all ate, Brian announced he was going to Chris's house and was inviting anyone who wanted to come. Kevin said he was gonna be busy so he wouldn't be coming. Brian looked across the table at Elizabeth to see what her answer would be.
"Can I come?" Elizabeth asked.
"Sure. If you don't act like a lovesick puppy," Brian answered shaking his head while laughing.
"I don't like him!" As she said this, Kevin was smiling as if to say ;YES, you do!'
"Sure, whatever you say. Anyway, you can come. I'll be leaving in five minutes." Brain replied
"Okay. I'll be ready."
Five minutes later Brian and Elizabeth headed out the door to Chris's house. He only lived a block over, so they walked. While they were walking Elizabeth asked about when she would start school. He said that she would start the following day. This excited her. Maybe she would be in classes with him and Chris.
When they arrived at Chris's house, he was standing on his porch. When he saw Elizabeth he smiled.
"Hey. What's up?" he asked.
"Nothing," Elizabeth replied.
"She wanted to come," Brian said like he had to bring her, but then looked at her and smiled. She knew he was joking.
"I was wondering. Do you want to go to the beach? My mom could drive us," Chris said.
"Sure!" Elizabeth said in an excited tone.
"I don't care," Brian said looking like he didn't care as long as Elizabeth was happy.
So it was settled. Chris's mom dropped them of at the beach. On the way there, they stopped at Brian's house so he and Elizabeth could get their suits. They had a lot of fun. The whole time they just laughed and acted crazy. Chris even said that he would like to see Elizabeth again sometime. 'So he likes me too,' she thought. At about four o'clock they called Chris's mom and got picked up. It was the best day Elizabeth had in a long time.
The next day she started school. All her main classes she had with Brian and Chris. She was happy about that. She also had a class about the ocean. She loved the ocean, and most of all she loved the fact Chris was in her class. That night she didn't have that much homework so she called Chris after dinner and asked if he would want to go out with her. He said 'Sure,' and that he would be over as soon as he could.
In ten minute he was there. Elizabeth said goodbye to Jane and ignored the look on Brian's face, then headed out the door.
"I'm ready, let's go." Elizabeth said as she stepped out on the porch.
"Where do you want to go?" Chris asked.
"I don't know. I don't know that many places around here."
"Hmm. Let's go to the beach again. We can walk in the surf and talk."
"That sounds good." She replied with a smile on her face.
They decided they would walk there even though it would talk awhile. When they finally arrived, they took their shoes off and walked to the water's edge. The water was warm and the air was still hot. There was also a slight breeze, and it made Elizabeth's hair swirl around her face. They walked through the water and held hands. Elizabeth never wanted the night to end.
"How have you been?" he asked her, turning her around so he could look into her eyes.
"I've been good. Why do you ask?"
"I just wanted to make sure you were happy here. I mean like with the Johnsons and."
"And what? And without my mom?"
"Yeah."
"I have been handling it well. I miss her so much, and I hate the fact God had to take her away from me."
"I'm not sure if I ever told you, but I am so sorry about what happened."
"Don't be. If it hadn't happened then I wouldn't be here with you." Elizabeth said batting her eyes.
Chris wrapped his arms around her. "I don't know what I would do without you." He held her for awhile and then suggested they go home. The next day was a school day. She reluctantly agreed and they headed back home.
