Time To Let Go
Jade flung herself onto her bed, breathing hard and shakily. She didn't want to think about James anymore. The mere sound of his name sent a sharp pang of guilt into her stomach.
"Jade! Jade!" shouted her mother's voice. "Jade!" Jade rolled over. She didn't want to confront her mother now. No, not now. Jade sat up slowly and made her way across her filthy and messy room towards her door. She locked it, and lay back down onto her bed. Jade closed her eyes. James' visage flashed into her mind, and she pushed the thought of him away. She needed to think about family and friends now...still, she felt guilty. James was deeply hurt and scarred by the words she had said, and-
"Jade! Open the door this instant!" yelled her mother outside her bedroom door. Jade simply sank deep into the many layers of blanket on her bed. She heard her mother's footsteps fade away, and she knew she had given up on having Jade unlock the door. Her head emerged from her blanket. A couple minutes of silence passed, and then the phone rang. Jade sat bolt up. The red light was flashing on the phone. She gingerly reached out for the cordless phone, held it to her ear nervously and said, "Hello?"
"Jade-I'm so glad it's you-please, Jade, why can't we talk? I mean, if there's something wrong with me I-I'll gladly change for you, but please don't leave me-"
"James," said Jade calmly and quietly. "It's you."
"Yes, it's me-but why did you break up with me? What's going on?"
"I told you already," said Jade. "It's not going to work out, you and me. I mean, you forbid me to spend time with my own friends and family-" There was a slightly shakiness in her voice. "-and you make me think the only person who cares about me in this world is you, but I know other people do too! You don't even let me speak to them. You don't even let me go back home. I have to stay at your house and feed you carrot sticks while you sit in front of the TV. I can't take it anymore, James. It's over."
"Okay, okay," came James' voice desperately. "I won't be a lazy slob anymore, and I'll let you see your family again, okay? I promise I'll change, I promise I'll let you do anything you want!" If James could see her, he'd see Jade shake her head gently, silent tears clouding her eyes.
"You won't even let me on the phone with other boys. You knew you were my boyfriend back then, so why did you have to get so suspicious with me? You did that every time I was on the phone." Jade took a shaky breath. "Sorry James. I-I just can't take it anymore. That's not called love, James. Ordering me to be with you twenty-four hours a day isn't going to make me stay with you. You were hurting me. And now that hurt isn't going to go away. Now if you'll excuse me, I think my mother is calling me downstairs." She placed the phone back onto the reciever and did nothing more.
Beep, beep, beep. James slowly put down his cellphone. Jade wasn't willing to get back together. What was wrong with her, anyway? he thought angrily. He promised he'd change. He promised he wouldn't do anything she had mentioned earlier. But why couldn't she still accept him?
He slipped his cellphone back into his pocket. Well, he thought savagely, if she's not going to come back to me, then I'll make her come back to me.
Jade gave her father a quick peck on the cheek and then hurried out the door. She checked her watch as she went. Only two minutes until her dentist appointment. Jade started running towards the building. Just then, a dark figure appeared out of nowhere and grabbed her. Jade screamed, but her mouth was quickly stuffed with a gag. The man was dragging her away from the dentist's building and into an abandoned street corner, where a worn-down barn stood. There, her hands and feet tied up. The dark figure was joined by another dark figure, and she was thrown onto the floor. She choked, and she heard deep male voices talking. Terrified, Jade sat still.
"What do we do with her now?"
"He said to..." They started talking in low whispers, so Jade couldn't hear anything. What was going on? Why was she here? One of the men turned to her and bent down. He lifted her chin.
"I can see why he requested us," said the man, smirking. He was dressed in black, but his face was visible. He had an unkempt beard, and a short hair cut. The other man was bald. "She's a pretty one." Jade struggled against the ropes. She managed to lash out with both of her feet and kicked the nearest man in the shins, but then she toppled over. The man cried out in agony. "A tough one too!" laughed the other one.
"Jade?" said a voice. Jade recognized that voice. It was James. "What the-" Immediately, the two men began attacking James, but he seemed like he was expecting them to attack; he pushed them away roughly, punching one in the nose and actually throwing one bodily into the wall. They crumpled at his feet. "Who're you?" he ordered them, kicking their bodies. "What're you guys doing to my friend?" When they didn't answer, James kicked them again.
"Listen," he said menacingly. "If you don't tell me this instant, I'll hurt you."
"We were just getting her on our boss's orders!" one burst out. "He told us to get her!" Jade noticed his voice was like stone, and there was barely any panic in it at all. James kicked them again, and said, "Go. I don't want to see you again, okay? Go! Get!" The two men scrambled out into the street. James turned to Jade and immediately began untying her. He relieved her of the gag.
"Thank you," gasped Jade. "Thank-you-" James gently took her into his arms.
"It's alright now," he soothed. "It's okay now." Jade was breathing hungrily.
"How did you find me?" James seemed a little struck by this question.
"Um-well, I was just passing, 'cuz my friend who lived here told me to come. Then I heard you scream, and then-well, I hurried here. It's nothing, really," he added hastily, in case Jade questioned a little further. "I just thought I'd-um, pass by." Jade smiled gratefully at him, and she hugged him.
"Thank you," she whispered. "You saved my life." James let her bury her head into his chest, and he smiled slyly. Piece of cake, he thought.
Weird ending, indeed. REVIEW!
