The New Kid
Since Cherri and I were in the same homeroom we sat down in the middle row, about three or four seats in. We were on our last legs to know what our schedules were and, for me, the tryout dates for the musical.
"Shannon!" said such a familiar voice that I rolled my eyes as I turn around, just to see Kevin standing there with a whinny smile on his face.
"What?" I said with my teeth clenched but still smiling with widened eyes.
"Well, it's Shannon," he said loud in a news reporter voice and holding a pretend microphone to his mouth. "Looking better than ever this season." Cherri and I looked at him as if he were a clown. Actually he is a clown. Especially this year.
"Yeah Kevin, tell me something I don't know," I said, "and if you think that I'm hot this year, let me tell you this, highlights are not in season."
Kevin had, what looked like, self highlighted his black hair with raspberry shaded high lights.
"Hey are you dissing my man Kevin here?" said a sharp voice. If there's a Kevin, then there is a Mike and a Rick. It was Rick who yelled at me. "Rick, I always diss Kevin, and its not like he cares, he still wants to go out with me" I said looking at Rick hard. "Gosh, you think you would have noticed that by now" said Cherri rolling her eyes.
"Oh, please, who cares?" said Mike butting in. "So girls, where do you think would be the best place to start off our world tour?"
"Wait a second," said Cherri. "You guys are starting a band?!"
"Well, they are in the school band," I said trying to hold back laughing.
"Oh my gosh, what do they play?" asked Cherri also trying to fight off the laughter too.
"Mike, plays the flute, Rick plays the sax, and Kevin plays the drums," I said laughing slightly. Cherri and I started laughing hard, thinking that was their band.
"NO, we're talking about a rock band," said Kevin. Our laughing stopped abruptly. "A rock band?" said Cherri with a look of confusion on here face.
"Yeah," said Mike contentedly. "I play bass, Rick's lead guitarist, and Kevin just drums. We are still looking for a back up guitarist though."
"He better be the vocals too 'cause you guys aren't going anywhere if you don't have vocals, and I know you cant sing worth a flip." I said. "We better go sit down, 'cause the bell's going to ring."
Mike, Kevin and Rick sat behind us.
Ding, Ding, Ding
"Good morning class," said Mr. McCann brightly. "I am very excited about this new school year and to get to know each and every one of you…" He continued his speech as Cherri passed me a note. It read:
Shan, Look it's that kid, walking with the principal outside!
I looked out the window and sure enough Mr. Partly was showing the new kid around the school. The classroom door opened and all heads looked over.
"Excuse me, Mr. McCann, Aaron got lost and is a new student in the school", interrupted Mr. Partly.
"Ah, yes" said Mr. McClann, "Pleasure to meet you, it looks like there is a seat by this young lady over here." He pointed to Cherri. Aaron smiled somewhat and paced over to the empty seat beside Cherri.
"Thank you Mr. McClann" said Mr. Partly, "I'm sure the students will make him welcome".
Mr. Partly nodded and walked back to the door. I caught Cherri taking peeks at Aaron as Mr. McClann read the morning announcements. Rick passed a note that flew through Cherri and my shoulders. Cherri picked it up and started to read it, then passed it to me.
'Hey, Do you think he plays guitar?' it said. I wrote back: 'I don't know, why don't you ask him?' I passed the note back to Rick, he read it and rolled his eyes.
"…and never solve a fight with your body" said Mr. McClann in conclusion. "You can talk amongst your selves while I pass out your schedules for the year."
"The biggest moment of the year," sighed Cherri. "Man, I hope we are in the same classes this year!"
"Yeah, last year rocked," I said as Rick received his schedule.
"So what's your first class?" I asked.
"Math," he said, disgusted.
"Man that sucks," said Kevin.
"Yeah, what can be worse than math in the morning?" asked Mike.
"Math in the afternoon," said Cherri as I was getting my schedule.
"OK Cherri if you have the exact same thing on mine as you do yours our lives will be perfect!" I said happily.
"Shannon, can I see your schedule?" asked Mike.
"Yeah, here you go" I said, handing it over to him.
"Shannon, I got mine!" said Cherri.
"Yeah, we all have the same classes," said Mike "We'll all be like a pack going from class to class together!"
Cherri and I looked at him weirdly and then returned to our schedules.
"Yes, we've all gotten the same classes!" said Cherri and I hopping up and down. "Really, me too," said an unfamiliar voice. Cherri and I looked over at Aaron. He had on a smile.
"You probably know that I'm new here, I was wondering if I could follow you guys around for the first few days so I wouldn't get lost."
"Sure" I said. "I'm Shannon, and these are my friends Cherri, Kevin, Mike, and Rick."
"Hey," said everyone in unison.
"Do you know were anything is?" asked Kevin
"Just the rooms up here and the gym isn't too hard to find," said Aaron.
"Coolio," said Cherri. "You can eat lunch with us too, if you like."
"Great," said Aaron.
It just so happened that Aaron did play guitar. So now he's part of the band.
