I had followed her, pursued her, my senses telling me to press on. In the dark of the night she ran, that little girl in the pink dress, which was covered in dark streaks like someone had dipped their hand in black paint, and had slashed wildly at her with that hand.
She fled into the darkest alley, one I was familiar with. The shadows of the endless path of night had consumed the girl, into its evil depths, enshrouding her in that velvety black, like a pool of black quicksand. She thought she was safe, that I like all humans would pass her by, not having the faintest clue that she was there, submerged in the inky heart. But I knew. I knew she was there, the soft sound of frantic, frenzied breathing reaching my ears.
" I know you're there." I stated softly, but loud enough for her to hear.
" The shadows will not hide you from me."
The girl stepped out of the alley in a halting manner like a robot or a zombie. The moon appeared from behind the veil of a cloud, illuminating the small figure in front of me. There was an eerie, mysterious feeling about her as only she could radiate.
The child was pale, ghostly pale, her face gaunt and skeleton-like. Her brown hair hung limply in thick wet stands about her face. None of this bothered me, until she began to giggle uncontrollably. It was her taunting giggling that sent a chill down my spine and the hairs on the back of my neck to stand. I refused to back down so easy.
"Speak!" I commanded, pointing sharply at the demon child, " You know valuable information. Too much."
" Yes I do." The demon said with a shrug. She smiled coldly, her smile as bitter and as cold as a winter evening. The girl continued. " You silly human. You know naught about the fate of your kind. Do not meddle with those of greater power." Her cooler-than-thou manner had already gotten on my nerves, and I glared, annoyed.
" But there are those who dare to meddle." I countered, " And I am one of them." The girl was silent for a moment, then let out a weak laugh. " Then you human will perish when the world of your kind meets its end, taken over by other creatures, creatures far more powerful than I. Remember a demon child told you this when you lie dying human, feeling life slip away from you."
She struck up her irritating, high-pitched giggling and ran from me, down the long alley, the portal of doom. I closed my eyes, listening to her echoing footsteps fade into the night silence, gloom overhanging the lonely spot in which I stood. The girl was right. I had known of this conquest to come as the voice had often nagged me. I opened my eyes. They had gone from brown to a fierce gold. Smiling inwardly I turned and walked from the evil, absentmindedly playing with a dagger I had drawn out. The demon had called me a human, but she was wrong. Very wrong. I was not human.
~* Ahhhh, yes, a cliffhanger ending. But that's how I wrote it, even if you do want to strangle me because of it. So what do ya think? Review please! If you like this story wait for the continuation, it's going to be called MoonWalkers: Meet the end. Look for it in about another week or two. That one will get more deep into whom Aris really is. I know she kind of an edgy, undefined character, and it was hard for me to just keep hinting that she was not a human, but just for the record, she's not a demon child, and she's not the one the title refers to. The sequel will get you more accustomed to her, and you'll see more into her personal ready and hold on, cause it's coming your way! See you next time!*~
