The heart moniter beeped slowly, but rhythmically; Anthony was still alive. Fae paced the room nevously, though she didn't know why exactly. She was no longer "attached" to Anthony, persay... but she was the only on in the phone book on his cell phone, and the only number on the emergency card in his wallet. No one else cared about the accident; no one else cared about Anthony.

That night was Anthony's twentieth birthday and he was driving home from the movie theater he had just been at. Movies are no fun alone he thought to himself, switching the cruise control in his Mustang on. He was nearly home when it happened; the Expedition ran the red light and smashed into the driver's side door of Anthony's beautiful Mustang, totaling the car, and nearly totaling Anthony in the process.
Medical teams arrived at the site almost immediately and used the Jaws of Life to pull Anthony from the car. They were not sure how long he would live, but knew they had to try no matter what. The paramedics put his unconscious body onto a stretcher, careful to move him as little as possible, and drove him to the Emergency Room.

"Hello, Miss Brooks. I'm sorry for the delay, but I had to respond to an emergency call. I am Dr. Whitefield, but please, call me Stanley... or Stan if it makes you feel more comfortable," he paused to swallow, his eyes surveying both the machines in the room and Fae's expression, "I haven't gotten the chance to visit the site of the accident yet, but I was told by the medical crew that brought him in that it was terrible: one of the worst they have ever seen. Anthony is lucky to be alive at all," both Fae and Dr. Whitefield looked over at the bed where Anthony was laying.
He looked like he had gone through an awful wreck... and Fae could only see his face, every thing else was under a loose, lumpy sheet.
"When will he be released, or is there no hope?" Fae asked, more to break the uncomfortable silence than out of consideration.
"Actually, he is doing quite well and should be recovered enough to leave in just a few hours," Fae sighed, she was unsure how she felt about that.

Fae was walking home at a brisk pace. She could not believe what had just happened; Anthony had dumped her. She could not even see the reasoning behind it, they had even been voted best couple by their college for the second year in a row. But none of that seemed to matter to Anthony, as a matter of fact, nothing seemed to matter to him at all anymore.
"Fae, wait! I didn't mean it like that!" Anthony yelled, she heard running footsteps approaching that could only belong to him. She spun around,
"Honestly, Anthony, there was no other way you could mean it. You said you didn't think we were working out the way it used to; you said you didn't feel the flame anymore; you said we were over... I see no other way that you could have possibly meant for that to come out. Now leave me alone; I'm going home and I don't ever want to see your face again," she yelled into his face. After a brief pause she continued stalking down the street, leaving Anthony standing on the sidewalk dumbfounded.

The couple had not ended on good terms and the feeling of resentment and hatred were still boiling strong in Fae's blood. Things had only ended two days prior to now, but she could not help being there. She knew she still cared about him... in fact she knew that she still cared about him more than she was willing to admit.
The rest of the afternoon Fae waited for Anthony to wake up, but it never happened. Around seven pm Fae got into her car and drove home with nothing but a promise from the doctor that she would be called if anything happened to Anthony or his status. She would be informed of anything: good or bad...
