"Did you know who they were?" Jack asked.
"Who?" I said in pretended ignorance.
"You seem to know them well." He said, eyeing me as he did. "The family?"
I smiled and said nothing more, knowing how bitter my smile was. Jack did not press any further.
The sun was setting outside, in perfect view of my window. It is only the third I've seen since I came here. A year had been added to my age since the incident. The pain was, still vivid, still fresh in my memories.
My life had changed.
No longer do I live the city streets.
No longer do I roam the nightly roads.
No longer do I return to an abandoned home.
No longer do I believe in my life before.
Three others shared my views and this humble abode I now live in. Life seems fair, for now, only days after my release from a rehabilitation centre. They were willing to release me sooner, for, they saw it was freedom that I truly needed.
"Well," Jack followed my gaze soon after, "I'm thankful at least for your story."
"You're the first to have heard it all." I remarked, remembering no one in particular, looking away into the auburn sunset.
"By the way," he began again, "do you have a name?"
"My name?" I felt as though I've never heard of it before. So long it had been since I've ever used my true name. Ever since my dear Emily left.
For five months I had undergone rehabilitation. Two months before I had confessed my doings and awaited recovery. Though, my friends I said nothing of them. Let them do as they please, I will no longer care.
Now that I'm free, I could almost say I've forgotten what my name was. Almost.
I turned to him, allowing a moment of silence to pass. With that moment's thought, I recalled my name.
"My name's Tim."
'Just Tim.'
