Lightning

Often naught one has seen,
Perhaps, perchance, per sudden gleam,
Precedes a roar of rolling stones,
Giant boulders crashing down,
Upon heaven's threshold.

If you ever, find yourself,
Chattering upon a stormy day,
Listen close, listen hard,
You'll understand when I say,
"The great boulders of heaven rolls"

Yet not This but else that pleased,
As sound bewitches little than That;
It captures, it enchants, it draws my gaze,
For sight is That, and That isn't This,
For 'tis beauty that I behold.

It grows with tremendous speed,
Sudden death comes as soon as birth,
Borne of empyrean's clouds,
To reach upon earth's ground,
Only to try, not always with success.

A streak of light, sudden daylight,
Only for a moment's lasting sight,
Sometimes only, a long twisted line,
More often, a finger, branching into many,
As that a great oaken tree.

Sometimes white, sometimes blue,
Sometimes yellow, sometimes purple,
The many hue of this majestic splendour,
Sometimes lovely, sometimes frightful,
Always, unpredictable.
