Staying Alone

Chapter 2: Seeking Purpose

~ * ~ * ~

Running. Not wanting to turn back seeing all the kind people, whom had helped her, be sad and watching the girl they cared for run away, without even a goodbye. However, Sara had no time for farewell. She had to get away from all of the government officers, who seemed to be everywhere she went. It had only been a month, and ever since Sara had started running; the more she ran. The lonelier she began to feel inside. It was tearing her up in her heart to see everyone's eyes looking at her.

Sara ran down the street, until she noticed that the bright orange sun was sinking slowly beneath the tall skyscrapers. The Japanese girl stopped running and turned quickly into a narrow alleyway. This dark passageway was not the kind of life Sara thought she would be living in America.

Looking around, Sara noticed a large steel fire escape and underneath was a small, dark area, with barely enough room for one person. Realizing she had no where else to go, Sara crawled on her hands and knees into the small space.

While underneath the steel steps, it soon began to rain. The pouring dense water surrounded the girl on all sides. Pulling her knees to her chest, she tried to stop the rain from soaking the ankles of her faded blue jeans, and her already wet and worn tan-colored sandals. Her long raven black hair fell over her slim shoulders and across her eyes. Her soft green eyes were filled with pools of tears.

The soft water fell from her eyes, as Sara thought about her mother. Sara wondered if her mother felt the same, while she was alone in the little town, suffering, with little food, no family or friends. Sara wanted to be with her mother so much, but did not want to go back to poverty. Just then, she got an idea. She would bring her mother here, and they both would live happily and freely, but how?

Suddenly, Sara felt something. Curiously, she reached into the pocket of her jeans and pulled out something green.

Sara looked at closely and recognized it as an American 5-dollar bill. She received it as gift two months ago from the priests and nuns at the church. Sara had no clue want to do with it; however, she had seen people trade it in exchange for things like clothes and food and travel.

Then she had an idea. If she could collect enough of this American money, she would be able to bring her mother to America.

From that day on, Sara wandered around the entire West Coast, getting free rides when she could, working small, odd jobs, and making little money slowly.

After almost a year of traveling, Sara was able to save about 1,000 Americans dollars. However, this still wasn't enough, and the more Sara wandered, the lonelier she felt in her heart. Nevertheless, the Japanese girl would not give up. She was determined to see her mother face, and to be held again in her mother's arms.
