matt- the friend

i got back with two screwdrivers but devin had disappeared. i could have had both drinks by myself, but she seemed like she needed company so i went about trying the find her. i asked this tall beautiful honey skinned girl whom i saw devin walking in with if she'd seen devin. she introduced herself -by swinging her arm around my neck- as lola and told me she'd seen devin heading up stairs. i decided to go find her, and i thanked lola politely. the girl had a very bright smile.

when i got half way up the stairs i heard someone yelling. Devin? no way, cant be. it was. this guy had his arms around her as she pushed him away. my heart skipped a beat. relax. i tried to tell myself but with in a moment i was confronting this big shouldered guy that had had his arms around Devin before hand.

"what are you doing?" i demanded. i think my voice came out a bit shakey. the guy looked at me then at Devin.

"matt! thank god. get me away from this asshole." i turned to face devin who's face was red with anger and she seemed like she might cry.

"Dev are you okay?"

"i will be as soon as i'm away from this jerk. lets go." she said glaring daggers at the guy and leading me down the stairs, at the same time downing the screwdriver in less then 10 seconds.

"o...kay...then." i said to myself. i followed her down the staircase and out the door. "who was that?"

"just some dickhead that's always ...always trying to go to far to fast. whata disgusting perverted asshole player. do i look like just some piece of ass?!" she yelled out. i know the question was retorical but i felt like answering it anyway.

"no. definatly not. your the last person i would say...is just a ...a piece of ass." at the sound of that she raised her eye brows at me. "what i mean to say is your much more then just looks. your very intelligent and, your witty, and you have morals. not like some other girls i know. and you deserve better then him." i was just being honest. Devin is one of the only people i can hold a good conversation with. because she is intelligent. i hadn't realized but during my speech Devin's mouth quirked into a smile.

"thank you." she said softly. and gave me a hug.

feels nice.

what was that? subconscious thought. it doesn't feel nice, it feels like Devin. Devin, you know. the girl you've known since you were about eight! Devin stepped back with her arms still around my neck looking up into my eyes.

feels really nice.

stop that! i fought it back.

"Matt your like the coolest guy i know. i mean it." she said and gave me another hug.

you KNOW it feels nice. stop fighting it.

its just a hug! and it's just Devin! enough already. its just Devin. my former next door neighbor from brooklyn. my father's co-workers daughter. we went to pre-school together for god's sake. its just Devin.

stop fighting it.

no!

relax, its okay. its not just Devin.

yes it is!

she's all grown up now. she's not trampling over your building blocks anymore.

she's still Devin! she's still Devin! she's not just some chick.

i was getting tired of all this brain fighting.

she's beautiful. she feels nice in your arms doesn't she?

what? no. yes she is beautiful but in a plutonic way. she feels like anyone else i would hug.

you love her.

no

yeah, you do.

no i dont stop it.

you love her-

"Matt i'm sorta cold. wanna go back in?"

"sure. anything you wan-."

"what?"

"huh? oh nothing. sure lets go inside." my heart was racing.

whoever that guy was he better not come close to her ever again or i'll nock his lucky charms out.

i followed Devin back into the house and watched her down three shot of vohdka. she looked like she knew what she was doing.

how wrong was i.
