I gently place her body on a raft and step back. The tide washes in and out, dragging her farther and farther away. The cloud concealed moon fights to shine its dim light on the gray water. As she floats to the horizon, I change my mind. My body goes numb as the water reaches my knees. I want to swim after her, but I know that she's too far away now; it's too late.

I sucked the moon
I spoke too soon
And how much did it cost
I was dropped from
Moonbeams
And sailed on shooting stars

The icy water slips over itself in a desperate attempt to drown me. Kicking and flailing, my head is swallowed by the waves. When I open my eyes, I see the faces of all the lives claimed by the deep. And there she is. I reach out to grasp her; to pull her back, but her face drifts away ever so slightly. I kick again and reach, but the moon slides behind the clouds and everything is black. Black, cold, alone.

Maybe you'll
Be president
But know right from wrong
Or in the flood
You'll build an Ark

The waves throw me back, but my head bobs above the surface again. She's so close now; I can see her. The pale moon casts an eerie glow on her skin and her lifeless eyes are dull diamonds against the gleaming sea. With the last of my strength, I dive deeper and take her hand in mine. She is dead weight on my body, but I manage to get back to the surface. Her limp head falls onto my shoulder, just like when she was alive. Taking a deep breath, I heave her back onto the raft and then climb on. My salty, mournful tears disappear on her wet face.
As I weave my fingers around hers, a gale gives us one final push towards the moon on the horizon. It's as though we're drifting towards the edge of the earth. Her hair softly blowing on my cheek, I freeze and fall asleep. . .
* * *
And sail us to the moon
Sail us to the moon
Sail us to the moon
Sail us to the moon

He breathed his last breath with her and then returned to once again rule with all the souls claimed by the deep.
