New Boy in the Classroom

I remember way back to one fateful day in kindergarten. My teacher, Mrs. Janisch, announced that there would be a new boy in class. His name was Tony Young. He had dark, coal black hair. I'm not quite sure what color his eyes were but I believe that they were a silvery gray. I remember having a crush on him right from the start, but it wasn't exactly love at first sight.

We were almost inseparable; I was almost always asking him to sit next to me at circle time. We rode the same bus home from school, so we always sat next to each other. Then one day, something incredible happened-I was sitting next to him at the front of the bus (almost right behind the driver!), and he kissed me on the cheek. It was very quick, and he looked slightly embarrassed, but pleased. I was obviously surprised, but I don't remember saying anything to him.

Sometime later that year, something horrible happened. I was on the bus yet again, and we were at Tony's stop. I heard his dad talking to the bus driver. He said that the family was moving to Germany! The news ripped my heart in half many times, and then carelessly threw the pieces onto the floor of the bus, while I sat still in my seat.

A few years later, I was walking on the playground at recess, heading towards the monkey bars. I saw a boy that looked oddly familiar, but I could not place a name to that face. Then it hit me-the spiky black hair with those gray eyes. How could I have not seen it before? It was Tony! By then I had gotten over my crush on him, and had a new love interest. And by the looks of it, he had gotten over me also. I mentioned that he had kissed me, and he said in a high voice, as we were only third graders: "No, I didn't!" "Yes, you did!" I argued back. This didn't go on very long, but I lost. There was one other boy around, so I had probably embarrassed him.

I haven't spoken to Tony since then, because I changed schools after third grade. Yet, I will always remember the new boy in the classroom.
