Getting Things Straightened Out

Taylor sat there for close to ten minutes before realizing that he was lying in a hospital bed with a cast over his left arm and his right leg. He wondered what had happened to land him in the hospital, then he remembered.

He remembered Sean Lirlek, he remembered Rebecca's death, he remembered burning those teenagers, he remembered everything. He preferred not to.

"Ack," he muttered under his breath when he tried to move a little. Pain burst out in his plastered arm. By plastered I mean it was in a cast, not drunk. He looked around and saw that he was the only one in the room; all of the other beds were miraculously empty.

MORNING.

Taylor tried to sit up and almost screamed out in the pain that action caused.

MORNING?

Taylor looked to the window and saw that very weak beams of sunlight were shining through. It was indeed morning.

YOU'VE BEEN OUT FOR A WHILE.

I FIGURED.

Taylor calmed down and felt the comfort of the fluffy pillow he had been sleeping on for God knows how long.

HOW LONG HAVE I BEEN OUT?

Taylor found it strange that he was having such a normal conversation with a dead girl, but he went with the flow nonetheless.

A GOOD TEN HOURS.

SHIT.

YEAH.

Taylor closed his heavy eyes and threatened to fall asleep. He bolted awake with the next message Rebecca sent. It was then that Taylor realized that her messages weren't causing a ricochet or echo in his mind like they had before.

I'M SORRY I DIDN'T WARN YOU ABOUT SEAN.

YEAH? I BET YOU ARE. GLAD YOU WARNED ME ABOUT OCEAN AVENUE THOUGH.

DO I DETECT SOME SARCASM?

YOU CERTAINLY DO. WHERE THE HELL IS OCEAN AVENUE ANYWAY?

The picture of the street sign with "Ocean Avenue" spray-painted on it suddenly materialized in his mind. That cold voice made him open his eyes, no longer tired, but scared.

YOU DON'T NEED TO KNOW THAT TAYLOR.

FUCK IF I DON'T! YOU TOLD ME TO STAY AWAY FROM IT. HOW CAN I AVOID IT IF I DON'T KNOW WHERE IT IS?

No answer came for a long time. The silence suddenly seemed very loud. Taylor was about to yell the question again when she answered.

IT'S NOT AN ACTUAL PLACE TAYLOR.

WHAT?

REMEMBER OUR LINK IN LIFE?

OF COURSE I DO.

YOU DON'T REMEMBER WHAT YOU CALLED IT?

Taylor thought for a long time and then replied negative.

I DIDN'T THINK YOU DID, WHICH IS WHY I WARNED YOU IN THE FIRST PLACE.

WHY DON'T I REMEMBER?

FUCK IF I KNOW. IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH SEAN, THOUGH. I KNOW THAT MUCH. YOU CALLED IT OCEAN AVENUE.

WHY?

BECAUSE OUR THOUGHTS TO EACH OTHER WERE LIKE TRAFFIC ON A STREET, AND SOMETIMES WHEN WE COMMUNICATED THAT WAY IT FELT LIKE YOU WERE BEING ROCKED BY WAVES IN THE OCEAN.

Taylor chuckled.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH OCEAN AVENUE THEN?

I DON'T KNOW. I'M JUST INFORMED THAT SOMETHING BAD WILL HAPPEN IF YOU GO THERE.

WHY, AREN'T YOU JUST FULL TO THE BRIM WITH INFORMATION?

FUCK YOU.

Taylor chuckled again. "Thanks darling."

YEAH, YOU'RE WELCOME.

I'M TIRED.

YES, BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT YOU SHOULD EXPECT OF SOMEONE THAT JUST GOT TEN HOURS WORTH OF SLEEP.

"I'm"

READY

"for"

MY

"pain"

KILLER.

Taylor heard Rachel's voice laugh. Taylor cracked a smile and nearly laughed himself.

RING FOR THE NURSE THEN.

TOO TIRED. I'M JUST GOING TO SLEEP TODAY AWAY.

THEN SLEEP.

I'M NOT DONE TALKING WITH YOU YET. I MISS YOU.

SAME HERE.

YOU MISS YOURSELF?

Rebecca laughed again.

NO YOU DUMBASS! I MISS YOU.

YEAH YOU DO. ANYTHING ELSE YOU'VE NEGLECTED TO WARN ME ABOUT?

A COUPLE THINGS.

LIKE WHAT?

WELL, THE APOCALYPSE FOR ONE.

Taylor burst out laughing this time, unable to hold it back. "So, I'm the fabled and way overused 'chosen one' to save the world from this unspeakable evil?"

NO.

HUH?

YOU DON'T SAVE THE WORLD. AND EVIL IS JUST A CONCEPT THAT DOESN'T REALLY EXIST.

I DON'T SAVE THE WORLD IN THE SENSE THAT IT ENDS?

I DON'T KNOW. IN THAT RESPECT I'M A LITTLE FUZZY. I KNOW THAT THERE'S A LOT OF FIRE.

HELL?

NO; HELL DOESN'T EXIST. CHRISTIANS ARE WRONG AND JUDAISM IS CORRECT IN THAT WAY. HOWEVER, BOTH ARE WRONG IN BELIEVING THAT HEAVEN EXISTS. TAKE IT FROM A DEAD GIRL, DEATH IS NO STROLL THROUGH THE PARK.

WELL… THAT CERTAINLY ISN'T COMFORTING.

WASN'T MEANT TO BE.

I KIND OF GOT THAT MESSAGE.

THEN THERE'S ALSO THE DEATH OF EVERY FIRST BORN CHILD.

WHAT?

THAT WAS A JOKE.

AH.

Taylor smiled at that.

BUT YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT SEAN WILL BE BACK.

WHAT IS HE?

NO ONE KNOWS. WELL, SOMEONE DOES. THERE IS A GIRL CREATED TO COUNTER HIS EXISTENCE AND TO 'BALANCE THE EQUATION' THAT WAS UNBALANCED BY SEAN. SHE'S ONLY TWO NOW, BUT SHE'LL PROBABLY KNOW WHEN SHE GROWS UP.

WHEN WILL THIS APOCALYPSE TAKE PLACE?

IN ABOUT FIFTEEN YEARS.

SO THE GIRL WILL BE SEVENTEEN? WILL SHE HELP ME?

NO, HER CONFRONTATION WITH SEAN WILL BE OVER BY THEN. YOU'LL HAVE SOMETHING NEW TO WORRY ABOUT. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THOUGH.

IS THE APOCALYPSE GOING TO BE STOPPED?

PERHAPS. YOU WON'T BE THE WORLD'S SAVIOR, THOUGH. I KNOW THAT.

AS YOU'VE STATED BEFORE. WELL, I'M GOING TO SLEEP NOW REBECCA. WILL YOU STILL BE HERE WHEN I WAKE UP?

AS SURE AS THE SUN WILL RISE.

SOUNDS LIKE A LONG SHOT.

Taylor's smile disappeared as he was immediately thrown into the world of dreams, not caring much that, in fifteen years, the world's chance of survival would reach damn near zero.

Hey, MorbidMan here. Sorry about this being so short. Sorry about the long period between updates. Gee whiz I'm sorry.

I've got some more stories up since my last update, and a hell of a lot more chapters. My longest story is "When the World Ends" (formerly "One of the Last"), and my second-longest is "Eccentric" (my newest, and my best). See you next chapter.

Even drones can fly away,

The Queen is their slave." - Narrator (his best haiku poem in the book in my opinion) "Fight Club"
