~ I edited this chapter because of a mistake pointed out to me in a review, her hair is supposed to be black…sorry about that! (Thanks dreamingofflyingawayJ)~
I was only catching snippets of conversation as I stared out the window and gazed at the trees as we passed them. The general theme seemed to be a huge party on the weekend. Apparently, Mike's parents are out of town for the whole weekend so he's having a huge bash. (He's got the biggest house in the neighborhood, or so I hear from everyone else, I don't really know him.) I turned to Luke; he was engrossed in his music. I tapped him lightly on the shoulder and he jumped a mile.
"What the hell?" he said, looking confused and slightly flustered.
"Hey, what are you listening to?" I ask gesturing towards his Discman.
"Metallica." He answered brusquely.
"Oh." I said quietly and turned back to the window. Luke obviously didn't want to have a conversation so I would have to amuse myself. I grabbed my own CD player out of my back and started playing the music. Soon my ears were filled with smooth, retro vocals. I found myself slipping into a mindless state after I got into the music. Thinking about nothing, just listening, the sound growing fainter as I began to fall deeper and deeper.
The slight rocking motion of the bus stopped abruptly. I blinked a few times and realized we were at the stop. Luke tapped me lightly on the shoulder. I looked up at him through my thick, black bangs. He had a crooked smile on his face. He was actually quite good-looking if you think about it. I would never ever tell him that though, partly because we are so close, but mainly because it would feed his ego too much. I picked up my book bag and stood up, meeting his gaze face to face.
"What's so funny?" I asked, puzzled. I knew better than this. Luke always finds something funny. He's always mocking something, his private joke with the world.
"Nothing, you just look so cute when you sleep." He said with a half smile.
"I wasn't sleeping!" I said defensively, my eyes twinkling, "Besides, you're the cranky one that needs sleep."
He chose to ignore my comment, "Dreaming about a certain someone?" He asked, raising his eyebrow and curling his lips into his well-known smirk.
"Maybe," I said, a playful look on my face, I was in a good mood despite the loss of my car and freedom. Luke laughed, but something seemed different. I smiled, happy that at least I wasn't still acting like a toddler. We were slowly moving down the aisle, neither of us eager to start the day.
As I stepped down from the bus, I tucked my long black hair behind my ears and said to Luke, "I hope I do well on the History quiz." He didn't respond just grunted and shrugged his shoulders.
I walked into my homeroom and sat at a desk by the door after I got my things from my locker. I saw Jake in the corner laughing with a few of his friends. As I was watching him they sauntered over in my direction, now standing near the desk that I was at.
"Yeah, the party this weekend is gonna be so awesome," One of them said, and by just that one phrase, it was evident that his brain had been fried by too many drugs and way too much drinking. Moron I thought to myself.
"Yeah, whatever." Jake said. His deep masculine voice piqued my attention. I began to fully wake up. Maybe today I'll be able to concentrate. Ha, doubtful. He always manages to worm his way into my mind some way, maybe he's magic. Again, doubtful.
My mind again began to drift into oblivion. I always seem to do that when it comes to Jake. Damn Jake. Why is he so unforgettable? I'm so pathetic and boring that I have nothing else to think about. Even Luke thinks I'm pathetic. Even though he doesn't say anything, he's been really distant lately. I don't really know what it is, but he's been different –
"Chloe, right?" the same deep masculine voice suddenly sounded forceful in my mind. This time my brain and my mouth connected.
" Yep, Hi Jake." I said, shocked at the three-syllable sentence that I had just managed to utter.
"Are you coming to Mike's party this weekend?" he questioned, furrowing his perfect eyebrows.
"I'm not sure yet," I said, shrugging my shoulders and looking into his green eyes.
"You should come," he replied to me, a twinkle in his eye. Ohmygod! Did he just invite me to a party! Ok, somehow I have to convince Luke to go with me.
"Maybe." I said trying to suppress the pure elation that threatened to bubble into my voice and make me sound like a fool. With that he walked out of the room. I watched him leave, half spacing out again when I heard a familiar voice behind me.
"What party?" Luke's voice inquired, sounding puzzled and I thought I heard slight annoyance. No, couldn't be, Luke has no reason to be angry.
A/N- ok, was that a good place to end it? Tell me what you think. Review, review, review!
