Prologue to Part One

Of Diablerie

There was blood, blood everywhere, crimson and dripping. But Zara knew that is was not her blood, though it came out of her pores and oozed over her lightly tanned skin. How was she tanned, Zara wondered dimly, when it was so dark in this room? She looked around the room with soft brown eyes and saw that she was in some sort of walled off area, with blood in puddles of the floor, though Zara herself was simply floating there as though bound by tight, invisible chains. She felt in pain, as though something where ripping her apart, and aside from the shattering pain she felt slow and groggy and confused. Was her hair still light brown and falling to her shoulders, or was that ripped off and now red, blood red?

Zara saw something comings towards her, a sort of odd blob shape that changed colors and pulsed softly. Zara could somehow tell it wasn't coming to save her, it was coming to cause her more pain. How could she be in more pain then she was now? It seemed impossible but the very thought made Zara scream louder then ever, snap out of her grogginess and struggle against the invisible chains. She felt an awful clamminess as the thing came closer, and then it touched her and she screamed as though she were being branded with a hot iron, wanting to die but knowing that the torture would go on forever…

Zara woke up covered in sweat. She would have screamed but her heart was in her throat. She had to stop studying before bed if it gave her nightmares like that, though Zara didn't really have a choice, with all the tests Miss Jay, her Math teacher, gave her. Every year a teacher would tell the class that she was preparing them for the super-hard next year, and it had finally happened in 11th grade. Zara checked her alarm clock, and it was six in the morning. She decided to take a shower, since she wasn't going back to sleep any time soon. Yet though Zara was filled with fear, her heart had stopped beating after a few seconds. Indeed, it seemed oddly empty and contracted, like her stomach felt when she was hungry…
